Today is the anniversary of a highly shameful act of the Nigerian Army. On 22nd of September 2017, the Nigerian Army did something that shocked many. They declared victory over an unarmed organisation that was not at war with anyone.

IPOB is an unarmed separatist organisation that is largely non violent despite hundreds of its members having been killed by the security forces of Nigeria. They are protesting for a referendum to be given to the people of the old Eastern Region for them to decide if they want to remain part of Nigeria

The government of Buhari proscribed IPOB on the 20th September 2017. Two days later, the Nigerian Army declared victory over the group

It is a thing of shame for any Army to be declaring victory of a group of unarmed people. The Nigerian Army cannot declare victory over armed groups that are killing Nigerians such as Boko Haram and killer herdsmen, but declared victory over IPOB that killed nobody. How can an Army declare victory where there was no war?

Shame!
