Kidnappers struck again in Anambra State yesterday, abducting a business mogul, Ide Jerry Okonkwo. The eight-man gang, all armed with AK47 riffles, according to an eyewitness, struck at about 5 p.m. at Okonkwo’s country home, Igbowukwu in Aguata local government area.

Operating in two sports utility vehicle (SUV), the kidnappers were said to have monitored the businessman, who has been described the biggest distributor of Nigerian Breweries in the country, and abducted him immediately he stepped out of his office.

The office, which is located opposite Apex Medical Centre, also houses his warehouse. An eyewitness said the gunmen shot sporadically as they escaped with their victim through Ekwulobia. As at press time, the kidnappers had not opened contacts with Okonkwo’s family.

Sunday Sun, however, gathered that Okonkwon’s wife was also kidnapped sometime last year. She was reportedly released after the payment of ransom. Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Mr. Emeka Chukwuemeka (ASP) said they were aware of the development, adding that they were closing in on the abductors.

He pledged that the command would do all in its power to fish out the abductors and eventually secure the release of the businessman.
