Where Will Suicides Spend Eternity?

A few weeks ago, an American pastor committed suicide a day or so after officiating in the funeral of a suicide. During his own funeral, his senior pastor praised him for being in heaven and argued that one moment of sin cannot undue grace and that people are saved based on what Jesus did and not because of what they do or do not do. His grief-stricken wife quickly keyed into the claim and announced that her husband was now in heaven doing what he loved best.

This provoked a theological firestorm in the US. Many people rejected the pastor's position and called him out for misleading Christians by offering false hope. A few praised him for giving hope to the bereaved

Does the Bible make any express statement on the issue? What is the deduction from express statements related to saints and sin and death by self? What is the eternal fate of those who commit suicide?

There is no express statement exclusive to suicides in the Bible. That is sure. There is no express statement that says "thou shall not kill thyself".

But there are enough provisions in the Bible to lead to an easy conclusion. Jesus repeatedly said that only those who persevered or continued to the end would be saved or inherit life. In his appearance to John in Patmos, this is reiterated several times. The apostles also demanded that believers push on to the finishing line in order to win the crown of life. They also told us that some will draw back to perdition. The single aim of the epistles is to warn believers to believe to the end.

This is important considering that both Jesus and His disciples endlessly warned that the Christian was going to face normal and abnormal difficulties, challenges, trials, persecutions and tribulations. "Be of good cheer" is Jesus' command and James said to "count it all joy". Paul said we should be "patient in tribulation".

The Book of Hebrews says that He will have no pleasure in a person that draws back. Paul spoke of the possibility of being a castaway if he did not take time to persevere to the end. Again he used the analogy of the Israelites who although were saved from Egyptbaptized aptised into Moses and drank of the Rock, which is Christ, perished before they could enter the Promised Land due to unbelief.

Firstly, Satan wants to stop us from getting saved. He blinds us and makes the gospel to be foolish to us. Secondly, we get saved in spite of all his efforts and then he focusses on sowing new doubts, discouraging us through trials and temptations. He uses the unsaved and also uses false preachers, false apostles, false teachers, even false brethren to wear us down.

If we surrender to these by taking our own life, we lose. Big loss. Permanent loss. Suicide is like abortion, except that in the case of suicide, we are aborting ourselves out of God's plan.

So, then, DO NOT commit suicide. NEVER! Unless you want to go to hell. To kill yourself because of the pressures of life is to draw back from His love. It is to stop believing in Him and His love and power. It is choosing hell after you had initially chosen life.
