2011 Presidential Battle Shifts to Govs’ Forum

•Northern governors’ forum rejects Daniel •Jonathan, Saraki test might at NGF’s meeting tomorrow

The battle for the presidential ticket of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has moved to the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), which is already embroiled in a succession crisis following the election of Ogun State Governor Gbenga Daniel as the new chairman of the forum.

THISDAY learnt that tomorrow’s meeting of the NGF to resolve the crisis will be a supremacy battle between the pro and anti-Jonathan governors as President Goodluck Jonathan is said to have thrown his weight behind Daniel to be the new chairman.

It will also be an opportunity to gauge the number of governors who are actually rooting for President Jonathan for the 2011 poll.

Meanwhile, the Northern Governors’ Forum has dissociated itself from the purported election of the Ogun State governor as the new chairman of the forum.

Daniel was said to have been picked at a meeting of PDP governors held in Abuja last Friday. Eleven of the 28 PDP governors had converged on Ogun State Governor’s Lodge in Abuja where Daniel was said to have emerged as the new NGF Chairman.

Two governors, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau of Kano State , who is from the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), and Comrade Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State , have, however, said they were not aware of Daniel’s appointment. Oshiomhole is of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN).

The NGF Secretariat, ostensibly spurred on by the outgoing chairman of the forum and Kwara State Governor Bukola Saraki, had also dissociated itself from Daniel’s appointment.

But it has emerged that the battle for the NGF chairmanship has become another front for the struggle for the PDP presidential ticket.
