More than 64 million Nigerians, constituting 46 per cent of the country’s 140 million population, are illiterate and cannot contribute to socio-economic development of the country.

The Board Chairman of the National Commission for Mass, Adult and Non-formal Education (NCME), Paschal Bafyau, said this yesterday when the Senate Committee on Education visited the commission’s headquarters yesterday.

Bafyau told the lawmakers who were on oversight visit that it was necessary for government to give an accelerated impetus in its annual budget to the commission in order to eliminate the problem.

He also said the commission needs a total of 200, 000 facilitators who will reach the target of at least 150,000 illiterates in each state of the federation.

The Executive Secretary of the commission, Alhaji Jibril Yusuf Paiko, said they were financially incapacitated to effectively meet their statutory mandate of ensuring Nigerians are educated at both formal an non formal sectors.

In response to your queries, the model is Digital Persona 4500. Most people have been purchasing the relatively cheaper Microsoft reader cos it is readily available. In frustration, I almost got it myself. But it is NOT approved for Fingerprinting on the UTME portal. Goodluck!

Hey guys I think we are in for trouble this year. The fingerprint stuff isnt working. I have used one of the recommended scanners. I succeeded in scanning, i was always returned back at the end with an error message that the fingerprint is of low quality. I have called one of the help lines provided, and to my shockl, i was told that each state of the federation has only one centre where the fingerprint scanning can be done. Some states are yet to get a centre. This means you have to travel to other states if u reside in one of these unlucky states. That is the mess we are in now. If you doubt, u can call one of the help lines to hear for urself. What do we do in this kind of situation?

@goldenray: Did DigitalPersona U.are.U 4500B work for you? Have you used it successfully to register a candidate? Because I ordered for that of 4000 because of money but I really want something that works.I have order from Lagos, APC manufactured not compatible, then I didn't check the list. But because Nigeria, all that is on that list won't work with that site. So keep ur cellphone on.This thing is not in Lagos. I order from China or Europe.

Yes it did work. 4500DigitaPersona tho. Gave a bit of Problem though. Initially complained of low resolution. but now works seamlessly
