ASUU Unveils UTAS As Alternative To IPPIS by Islie: 1:23am On Aug 19, 2020
Friday Olokor, Abuja

The Academic Staff Union of Universities on Tuesday told the Federal Government that the University Transparency and Accountability Solution, which it developed as an alternative to the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System is read for integrity tests.

According to ASUU, the software for UTAS was unveiled and demonstrated to the Minister of Education and senior management staff of the Ministry of Education, including the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, Prof. Abdulrasheed Abubakar, on Monday.

The national President of ASUU, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, made this known during a press conference held at the Gwagwalada campus of the University of Abuja, attended by almost all its national officers.

But Ogunyemi maintained that it would not suspend its ongoing strike until the Federal Government honours its 2019 agreements.

“It is our sincere hope that the government would not renege on its promise because the benefits of UTAS to the university system (both public and private) cannot be found in any other software in Nigeria today. Now that the union is close to meeting the government’s demand on an alternative to IPPIS, it is our sincere hope that the substantive issues in the ongoing strike action would be given the desired attention,” he added.

The ASUU president also lamented that five months’ salaries of their members at the University of Maiduguri and the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike are still withheld by the Accountant-General of the Federation on account of non-registration on IPPIS.

“Thousands of other academics across the Universities are suffering the same fate. So, while we counsel that government at both the federal and state levels must meet the Taskforce specified guidelines for reopening of educational institutions, we insist that all the arrears of the withheld salaries of our members in federal and state Universities must be paid immediately to pave for further discussion on the outstanding issues in the Memorandum of Action of February 7 2019,” he added.

1. The FG promotes local content. It shouldn't have any reason to reject UTAS since it's the brainchild of the Nigerian Universities.

2. The average Nigerian student has suffered enough, let FG & ASUU sort out their differences, once and for all. Whatever they agree, let the Senate president and Speaker of house of reps be additional signitories so that we can know who to hold responsible in future. We are tired of ASUU blaming FG, & FG blaming ASUU.

3. The children of the Big men (PDP & APC) are preparing to travel out of the country to resume. The private Universities will also resume immediately. Pls let FG & ASUU help the average Nigerian student return to school.

4. The level of increasing criminality, prostitution, gambling, violence perpetuated by idle youths owing to this strike is alarming. FG & ASUU, I knee down dey beg una, help students to go back to school.

5. Over sabi na him make okada wan overtake trailer. Make ASUU cool down small.

6. Do you know who I am, do you know who I am, na him dey cause traffic. Make FG sef cool down.

7. Wetin concern dog and family planning? Una wey no want resume school, make una no put mouth for this matter.

8. Monkey smart, Monkey smart, na because Tree near Tree. Students must collectively put pressure on government and ASUU without insulting them. School must resume abeg.

9. Barcelona, Mancity, Juventus and Maguire of PenManU,..I no go pray bad prayer for una. But una no try...

The FG had told ASUU to enrol on IPPIS pending the readying of UTAS. ASUU said it needed 2years. FG no agree. Only for bad sharp ASUU to present it within 6months of that discussion...Lol
If FG refuse to accept it, then Nigerian students and parents would know that FG is the problem. Let's not forget that Airports have been opened so that the children of the elites can travel back, as schools resume in September.

Even SSANU & NASU that enrolled on IPPIS has a bad experience with it. They are waiting for schools' resumption to begin their own strike.

No mention of the shortcoming of IPPS and how this UTAS is going to address it.

Both Lecturers and Politicians are rogues.

If it's not IPPIS, it's not IPPIS.

Why are they developing a similar thing like IPPIS?

Why are they running from IPPIS?

It must be IPPIS or nothing.

I stand with the government on this.

When Politicians and Civil Servants fight I don't get involved.. both are fantastically corrupt

Same thing Rochas Okorocha said about a Governor not living only based on his 750k salary, same thing Shehu Sani said about not living on mere Senator mere basic salary.. my civil servant friend told be exactly the same

Utas or uranus, they still won't escape all the taxes they've been dodging since 1960 cheesy cheesy
The "change" they've been receiving from ippis so far after all deductions is their new reality.

The next agitation strike will be for increase in salaries grin grin
...and the drama continues cool

jolyment:

Do you know that lecturers are entitled to excess workload allowances, etc.? IPPIS didn't capture all these entitlement. Lecturers are not fools!
The NUC representing the FG will accredit a program (course) and approve maybe 60 students based on the assessed capacity of the department, the university administration will give admission to 200 students. The lecturers should be fighting their respective university administrations instead of abusing unionism.

I'm not holding brief for the FG but these lecturers are just simply selfish... they dont consider the students at all in their actions.

What's tha business?

Nigerian students have entered one chance!

ASUU has done something very commendable. But I think we need to take some very drastic steps to see the change we desire in Nigeria:

1.) Without exception, Nigerians should insist that the children of all political officer holders and aspirants are enrolled in our public schools.

2.) Same with all Vice Chancellors and the administrative heads of our public tertiary institutions. If you have no children in any of these schools you should be disqualified from contesting or being appointed.

3.) Public institutions should be made to invent more, produce more, and be more profitable to support government subventions.

4.) Charge proper tuition for public tertiary institutions and offer single digit (e.g. < 5 %) study loan for Nigerian students while the government covers the shortfall between the interest and the inflation rate. The loan should cover both tuition and stipend for students whose parents can't afford to send them to school.

5.) Outsource a size-able part of contract jobs (skilled and unskilled) in public tertiary institutions to students
and allow transparent competitive process of recruitment. And pay those students.

6.) Put to flame the imbecilic quotas given to the so-called educationally less developed states. Any state that is still educationally undeveloped in Nigeria after 60 years of Nigerian independence can NEVER again be developed educationally. Force each state to develop its sectors.

Peace out!

There are alot of things to look into in this country to make it better. Though we need to start somewhere but not the lecturers' peanut earnings.
