I have always maintained that our leaders are extremely wicked and take pleasure in seeing the populace suffer....imagine this dolt of a minister talking trash! With the current costs of everything soaring high, electricity tariffs increased for the umpteenth time, planned return of toll gates, planned hike in VAT etc yet government through the dolt of a minister doesn't think a review of salaries in accordance to the new minimum wage of a ridiculous N30,000 is important? I doubt any of these devils will make heaven! 1 Like |

It is a known fact that minimum wage increase will lead to a percentage increase in other salary levels too, though it might not be noticeable. I could remember when 18k was implemented, some senior staff only received about 1k raise! The LU based their demands on minimum wage bill, not salary raise; if they'd clamoured for general wage increase instead, it'd have been another case entirely. Wetin go pain me pass here is if LU eventually accepts the 9/9.5% increase the FG is offering cuz that means they've denied civil servants months of that incremental benefits (since April). 1 Like |

The top officials are very selfish!! These are people who have been earning fat salary overtime and most of them are close to retirement and yet they are disturbing the lower cadre with the implementation of #30,000, despite them knowing the federal government is not even ready to pay Fadden!! Nigeria which way forward na? |

Angelfrost: My friend we cannot afford it. Period. Unlike other bone headed simpleton citizens my criteria is earnings not expenditure. What you spend should be tied to what you earn. That is how life has fashioned it. Nigerians are trapped in a viscious cycle of comparisons. They want more because someone else is paid more. Who does that. Will a man give his wife money based on what his neighbour gives his wife or what he earns. The managers of Nigeria should realise the facts. They either raise more revenue or cut down staff size or this country will go bankrupt simple. The National Assembly should act and form legislation pegging the maximum amounts available for personnel costs as a factor of the precious year's revenues. They should also compel the trade unions to sign in to make it legally binding on them. So that if oil rises everyone gets a bonus, if militants strike everyone visits the barbing salon. Also new civil servants employed should have a clause inserted that clearly states that it is not a job for life and that downsizing or rightsizing is a fact in the real world. Enough of this nonsense. 1 Like |

Reference:The question you should ask is how the wage bill ballooned from 1.08tr to 3.08tr in 3 yrs while the former minister of finance claimed she removed ghost workers and purged the civil service. Also ask why IPPIS has not been fully implemented till now. The end result is that TI's assertion that corruption has increased in this admin may be true afterall 3 Likes |

BuhariAdvocate:Those earnings more than N30k will get increase in their salaries. The issue at hand is how much should percentage increase be, like FG propose 11% but Labour want 24%. Ngige is actually correct, minimum wage issue is different from general salary review. Minimum wage main aim is to protect the least paid workers/employees and to increase adequately paid employees. Unfortunately, there must be structural adjustments to salaries on the basis of fairness. Basically, if a company or government is paying more than N30k for all her employees, he will not adjust the salaries of her employees. I do not why Labour leaders are ignorant of the terms (minimum wage and salary review), they two different thing. 1 Like 1 Share |

Angelfrost: Ha. Because we donot tie our expenditure to our earnings. I am a businessman and I know how much I should be spending on my staff. It is factored into every product I make and service I render in percent terms. If demand is good I will naturally need more staff or pay better for more work, if the market is poor I reduce staff and cut benefits. This is common sense. You must have heard job cuts in the public sector in the UK, policemen being laid off, etc. When Obama came onboard the armed forces size was massively trimmed and many military bases closed. Why is it that a consistently struggling country called Nigeria cannot cut its costs. You have heard it N1+ trillion in 2016 to N3+ trillion today at the same time there is a recession. This is reckless. Folks have often asked why the massive borrowings despite the hype of recoveries and blockages, well this is the answer. Goverment people have succeeded in taking legally what was being stolen previously. They have managed to increase their personnel budgets massively between 2016 and now and with little Legislative scrutiny are stealing from the public purse backed by the law. So the catch 22 scenario for the 'common man' is simple... Cut their benefits and they steal or allow them empty the treasury legally... 1 Like |

Buckubuck: The NLC should know how it balooned from 1 to 3 trillion. Their members work in the Ministry of Finance. Their members are part of goverment so what is the pretense about. If you are exposed to the vices what stops you from making these known in negotiations. Why doesn't it make it known to the public for support. Can the NLC claim it has not benefitted a cent from the massive increases In goverment personel costs over the past 3 years. Or what has it done to help goverment keep its expenditure manageable or it is not bothered about Nigeria going bankrupt. If Nigeria is to get good governance the trade unions are a critical component in moderating. Good goverment is the only guarantee of minimum living standards. 1 Like |

A time is coming when civil servants will have to act like civil servants the world over and start taking responsibility for the condition of this country. If Nigeria is in a mess they are partly responsible. It is they who execute the directives of the political class without resistance and engender the bad goverments they have become victims of. They worked in the office of Ms. Winifred Eyo-Ita for instance and processed dubious funds running into billions of naira for her perhaps getting to lick a few crumbs off the table. Then they want the common man in his village to help fight for them when nothing is left in the treasury. This is just what I cannot understand. 3 Likes |

The most useless minister of labour is ngige because he is a sadist. He doesn't want a better life for civil servant. While the mist compromise labour leader since inception is ayuba waba because he is a sell out. He has collected money from federal govt that's why they are unable to achieve something reasonable for workers they are collecting union due from their salary every month. 1 Like 1 Share |

I have said it here over n over again that the problem in these negotiations are the senior staff cadre who incidentally r the heads of the trade n labour unions. A minimum wage increase is to make sure that the least a worker in civil service can earn as basic salary is #30k. When government made that announcement it's expected that there would be a salary increase but the the way the senior staff are going about it using labour to cover for their selfishness. Some Perm Sec n Directors are earning about 300 to 500k already as basic salary not including allowances. If the percentage that is used to increase the salary of the junior workers is used for the senior workers then some would be earning over 1mil in basic salary alone. And most of them have been in service for years and are already billionaires from years of corrupt dealings in civil service. If their request is granted Nigeria will end up with a more bloated civil service n huge recurrent expenditure. So all our revenue are used to only pay salaries n that is all. How do we continue like this as a country? |

Reference:I can see you are getting the picture. Mind you Eyo-Ita is not being prosecuted for what she did now but what she she did when she was a Perm Sec....There are thousands like her like in the Civil Service who have been there for 20-30 years at the top service cadre. So do the maths. That's why Buhari is not after prosecuting them because they have the best lawyers that are good at delaying cases n subverting justice. So he settles for forfeiture because how many of them can you jail? They are big members of their tribes, villages n communities n once you start dealing with them then it's given a tribal coloration. We are in deep mess in this country |

Reference: Sir, we are saying the same thing... I'm all for cutting the nation's workforce in all sectors (except security)... But, should we allow the top echelons continue decimating the nation's resources??!... Why should the lower class working citizens constantly bear the brunt of government wastages??!.... I am also a business person, and while I cut recruitment and remuneration costs, I go further to plug other bigger avenues of financial drain, E.g. unnecessary travel expenses, exotic cars, wardrobe allowance... That's for a private business o, how much more a "public business" like ruling a nation... That's why I maintain that this government never had plans to cut costs, and build the economy. 1 Like |
