Two bullets were not enough to silence him. Spraying of bullets was necessary to end the life of one of Africa's greatest leaders in modern days.

Although he knew that he was walking up to his death, he stood up with honour and said: “It's me they want”.

Thomas Sankara made a lot of reforms that since he was killed, no African leader will come close.

Despite coming from a military background that's largely androcentric, he made reforms targeted at women. He said, “The revolution and women rights go together”. That was surprising in a misogynistic country. He appointed women into governmental positions and encouraged them to work away from home.

When Sankara stopped foreign aids, many analysts expressed pessimism that it might be a death knell for Burkina Faso, it rather became a fuel that helped Burkina Faso achieve food sufficiency, eliminating polio in record time.

One lasting legacy of Sankara's rule was the renaming of the country from its colonial name to be Burkina Faso, which means “The Land of Upright Men”.

At a time African leaders were still doubting whether HIV/AIDS was a divine punishment, Sankara's government recognised it and made plans to curtailing it.

Deforestation has been a problem that has affected West Africa for thousands of years. In a way to combat it, Sankara launched a tree-planting program that planted 2.5 million trees in just a week.

Unlike some leaders who preached anti-corruption but do the opposite, Sankara lived a modest life. He used the cheapest car available in Burkina Faso. He even lived without AC in a hot country like Burkina Faso.

Sankara was accessible to nearly everyone. He once sang with the great Africa son Fela.

Sankara as everyone was not without his fault. His greatest undoing was alienating himself from people who would have resisted imperialism and military corruption.

It's been 32 years since he was murdered in cold blood. As one of the handwritten messages said, “Mama Sankara your son will be avenged. We are all Sankara”, we are truly Sankara!
