The University of Lagos has set up a task force to address issues of sexual harassment with a view to stemming the ugly tide.

The university’s Principal Assistant Registrar for Communication, Mrs. Taiwo Oloyede, said in a statement that the move“is in continuation of the institution’s unrelenting campaign against the menace of sexual harassment and other forms of inappropriate behaviours.

The institution recently suspended two senior lecturers exposed to alleged sexual harassment in a BBC investigative documentary video, ‘African Eye’

The documentary also exposed some lecturers of the University of Ghana, Legon.

The task force has the mandate to examine the extant University of Lagos policy on sexual harassment, receive complaints from faculties, departments and other units concerning matters that border on sexual harassment.

It is to also receive oral and written testimonies from staff and students involved in cases of sexual harassment and recommend appropriate sanction for offenders.

The task force, in addition to other functions, will put forward counselling and other therapies for mitigating the adverse effects of sexual harassment on victims and carry out other duties aimed at eradicating the ugly trend from the institution,’’ the statement read in part.

Edo govt to purchase two armoured carriers to strengthen security
The task force is expected to send monthly reports of its activities to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe.

Oloyede reiterated the institution’s commitment to stamping out the menace of sexual harassment and related offences from its campuses.

She noted that the university “would spare no effort in ensuring that it remained a foremost citadel of learning and promoting excellence in character’’

The funny thing is that even some lectures are victims of harassment but once is the opposite no one believes. So every one needs to be at alert and gather evidence

Good move. But give this one year, Nigeria factor comes into play and the so called taskforce becomes infiltrated.

The first solid move is to enact a law at least 10 years without an option of fine.

The way most lecturers do this is they wait for their targets to get into a trouble and then come seek for their help. Or they trap them by setting hard exams questions knowing full well that just a very few smart students will scale through the questions. This one no be hearsay, I had two of my female friends harassed during our university days.

It's not a bad idea but will the anonymity of the students be guaranteed? Many will fear or feel shy to call so they aren't exposed

If any lecturer values himself, his family and his academic record, he would not be a recipient of the "cheerful giving" as he has got more to lose when it comes into the open.

No student threatens a lecture with sack if he doesn't give in to her sexual advances. But the lecturers do threaten the victims with "you will never pass this course unless" "you will never graduate unless" "I will make sure you are rusticated if you don't"

So please support your fellow women.

All administrative activities involving students must be computerized and administered by an external administrative body; no lecturer has any business knowing the name of a student not to speak of their administrative numbers or being able to influence test scores. Any thing less is an exercise in futility.

Damage control. Why you no do this before? You go talk say you no know say hin dey happen before? The VC is the mother of the school, the people are the father of the school. If a child turns out bad, the mother is to be blamed and the mother carries the shame. The reputation of the school is already ruined since its used as a case study on a world wide TV station and the VC is the one that bares the shame, what first came to my mind and surely the minds of many when I heard was that is there no VC in that school or he's only concerned about salary and allowances or also indulges in such? The VC and heads of other tertiary institutions, also principals of secondary schools better do something about this menace because some teachers are in the habit of sleeping with their students for marks, promotion in class, money and assistance in internal and external exams. You guys should all do something before your reputation becomes damaged and you're seen as being incompetent and after money alone. Whatever you do today, you and your children will surely reap before you die.
Also, all VCs and heads of schools should introduce dress code for girls especially because lust starts from the way a lady dresses and we are all humans. Try to emulate Prof Oloyede of Jamb that introduced dress code in Unilorin as a VC and it was very helpful, even boys could concentrate well in class. When Oloyede introduced it,many of you might be saying he's too conservative, fanatical, strict and not trendy or social but you see where he is now,he was appointed by Buhari because of his good works. Set up task forces to fine and punish women that dress skimpy. Most women that dress that way don't know how bad it is, more like most rice smugglers don't know how bad it is until the border closure

When these lecturers travel abroad in summer as visiting lecturers, where they see unclad girls parading as students, their pricks put themselves to check but back home, it's not the same. They see Alhaja on veil and trouble starts.

Women are indeed the enemies of women. Support your folks and let this be set up. Can a female student rape a lecturer or force him?

Just another preoccupation forgotten in a month.

The BBC documentary by Kiki was hurriedly made and hence a disservice to poor students going through hell with their lecturers.

Such a documentary should have taken years of compilation and should have touched major institutions in the country, not just Unilag, and many many other randy lecturers.

But I guess the journalist wanted quick fame. By the end of this month Nigerians would have moved on.

It is this type of STUPID attitude that emboldens sexual harassers. Serious re-education about sexual harassment and rape (including statutory rape) is seriously needed in this country
