I find the statement by Nasir Ahmed calling on the general public to "support and compliment the effort of the federal government by desisting from patronizing such smuggled goods and giving useful information to the relevant security agencies," very hypocritical and laughable. This is is the same feckless government that permitted one person from the north in a country of over 180 million people to be the sole importer of rice, sugar and other very important staple food items in Nigeria. This is an outright monopoly and the government decides who should be the winners and losers. Where in a civilized society would such anomaly be allowed to exist? If the government is serious and being honest about its actions, then ban importation of rice in toto with no exception. But as long as it bestows unfair business advantages to certain individuals based on ethnic origin, Nigerians would always find a way to flout government directives.
