Two carers helped themselves to the life savings of a pensioner with Parkinson’s, blowing thousands on new clothes and cosmetics. Sandra Smith, 70, suffered from epilepsy and required around-the-clock care at St George’s Care Home in Wallasey. Louise Pritchard-Stapleton and Leanne Reynolds were two of those who were meant to be looking after her.But instead they hijacked Mrs Smith’s bank details and began pilfering cash ‘drip by drip’ – eventually blowing almost £6,500 of the frail resident’s £9,000 pot. Liverpool Crown Court heard Pritchard-Stapleton spent almost £5,000 treating herself to fake eyelashes, hair extensions and new outfits while Reynolds spent almost £1,500 on Amazon buying gifts for her children. Pritchard-Stapleton was jailed for nine months and Reynolds was handed a six-month suspended sentence after they both admitted fraud.The court heard Pritchard-Stapleton told Mrs Smith £1,100 had been paid into a Just Giving account raising money for a specialist wheelchair for a sick 15-year-old girl whose leg had been amputated. But prosecutor Jonathan Rogers said: ‘That was a load of rubbish. It was set up as part of this fraud to take money from the victim.’ Her brother, bodybuilder Jonathan Pritchard, admitted money laundering after some of the funds were moved into his bank account and spent within a fortnight. He was given a 12-month community order and ordered to carry out 200 hours’ unpaid work.
