Eniola Opeyemi, writes from Ojo, Lagos State.

A lot of controversy has trailed the recent probe of the former executive Governor of Lagos State.

Mr. Akinwunmi whose fate for second tenure of office was thwarted by some politicians of his very political party over obnoxious policies; not being a good team player and as administrator who derailed from the Lagos State master plan, is also in the bad books of the state Assembly.

Indeed, some critic have taken to social media to air their opinions. While few are of the view of possibly witch-hunt, some Lagos State residents however decried the level of abandoned project left by the former Accountant- General of the state, especially the alleged diversion of funds initially meant for Lagos-Badagry Expressway to his acclaimed home town, Epe.

The subsequent trial of the former number one citizen has been acknowledged in many quarters as very rare well as courageous display by the 9th Legislative Assembly led by Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa. Besides, it is also perhaps the first of its kind in the 4th Republic.

Part of the allegations as highlighted by the Lagos State House of Assembly against the former helmsman are:

1. Unauthorised discounting of promissory note;

2. Purchase of 820 buses by his administration without due authorisation;

3. Misappropriation of Special Expenditure Funds;

4. Improper implementation of the Appropriation Law; and

5. Non-adherence to the Financial Regulations of the state.

Come to think of it, every administrator should be able to defend their actions and inactions after leaving office, and any issues that needs clarification should get due attentions; this will not only be seen as to enhance continuity, but transparency in governance.

Like we have often aspired to be among the best countries in the world, undoubtedly, the United States of America is one of few countries whose templates we have long adopted.

After the transition in government, the former President of the United States of America, Barrack Obama, was ready to answer every question on policies as posed to him by his successor, Donald Trump. Was hell let loosened, Nay! Obama was not only ready to give response but readily made himself available whenever his presence was sought. According to a report by Reuters in March 2016, over the alleged "wire-tapping" during Donald Trump campaign, again, neither Obama or his vast supporters cried foul, but responded accordingly. It is well said in every sense that "only the guilty are afraid".

In the local scene, another scenario that suffices was the case between the Federal Government of Nigeria and Lagos State former Governor, Bola Tinubu. In April 2007, after the general elections, the PDP-led Federal Government brought Asiwaju Bola Tinubu before the Code of Conduct Tribunal for trial over the alleged illegal operation of 16 separate foreign accounts. Tinubu in that 'Historical Trial' not only dismissed the allegations which he labeled "the figment of imagination of dreamers', but likewise stated that "If it is established that the said accounts were opened after he became the state Governor, he would readily surrender himself to EFCC." Expectedly, by January 2009, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission cleared him of any guilt.

However , The Lagos State House of Assembly have sighted "Section 129 (1)(c) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended)", which empowers the arm to probe Mr Akinwunmi Ambode, the former Governor of Lagos State (May, 2015 – May, 2019).

Accordingly, regardless of any misgivings, it is the belief of majority that the Lagos State House of Assembly has acted within Jurisdiction and in their capacity Lawmakers - and they deserve commendations.

Civic responsibility compels the former Governor to get his facts right, and allow his legal team to address all allegations before him and come out clean, as he claimed.
