10 Best Video Games Boss Battles Of The Decade by vasaratti: 6:02pm On Oct 30, 2019
This is the big boss you see in every promotion for Doom 2016 when it was set to launch. The demon that rips open the obligatory video game elevator you were just about to take to the next level to say "Hahaha, yeah no, you ain't done, get the hell back out here," and proceeds to fling you out to beat you into putty.

Naturally, such an insult cannot stand.

This boss fight is pretty much everything you've been going through up to this point, but against a demon who actually takes a few more punches than usual to go down. Which is perfectly fine with us, given that Doom 2016 is one of the best games of the decade, so more of the same, but with a larger boss, is just fine, thank you.

But more than that, it's challenging without being crushing, the boss fight moves at a steady pace, and when you take it down, you feel like the top dog, and that feeling is earned. Sometimes simplicity is best, and this is the boss fight that exemplifies that.

PS: I re edited the post and added the gameplay video of each boss battle to get a feel of how awesome each boss battles are

#9 The Marker - Dead Space 2

One of the best survival horror series ever made (until EA... EA'd all over it), Dead Space chilled audiences with its Ridley Scott-esque setup, and kept them captivated and coming back for more with rich lovecraftian lore that - like any good lore - added to the core experience rather than weighing it down.

And then they came back and did it all over again, but better, in the sequel.

There's very little about Dead Space 2 that can be said that showing wouldn't accomplish. But the final boss, simply known as The Marker, is a particularly exceptional case here.

At first glance it's little more than several waves of enemies rushing you one after the other and then you win. But then as you go throughout the boss fight, The Marker starts flexing its potent psychic abilities by using visions of your dead love interest to throw you off your game. By now it's been revealed that she's been dead the whole time, but that doesn't make it less distracting.

It doesn't sound all that frightening on paper, but when you play the game, it's one of the scariest moments in one of the scariest games ever made.

#8: The Spider - Limbo

Limbo is one of the founding fathers of one of the cornerstones of indie gaming: big headed children in bigger, scarier world. Hey, it was perfectly original when Limbo did it, don't make fun.

When people play Limbo, there is only one thing that everyone takes away from it universally. That being that the giant spider is absolutely terrifying. Not shocking, considering that anyone who says they aren't afraid of spiders is a damned liar and should be treated as such, but the spider in Limbo is especially frightening simply due to how little you know of it, and how helpless you are.

Because of the game's art style, it's unclear whether or not this is an actual spider or just another of the game's odd, terrifying machines that just has a particularly nasty grudge against you. All you do know is that there's basically nothing you can do against it.

All that you can do throughout the game is try to outsmart it, but in the last confrontation, the goal is to simply escape it and hope that this time, it doesn't follow you.

#7 Otto Octavious - Spiderman

10 Best Video Game Boss Battles Of The Decade
7. Otto Octavious (Spider-Man)
Insomniac Games
Insomniac's Spider-Man came onto the gaming world like a bolt out of the blue. It being Insomniac, everyone knew it was going to at least be decent, but no one could have expected the GOTY contender that came out. Refreshingly original, addictive as hell to play, and a story that took the franchise in directions no one had ever seen, how could a game this good top itself in the finale?

Well, for starters, by giving us one of the best final bosses of the decade.

There are a lot of reasons that the final boss with Otto Octavious is amazing, but since everyone knows how well this game is designed, let's look at this from a narrative standpoint. This is easily the best rendition of Otto since Alfred Molina's take on him in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 2. But whereas that was the story of a good man tormented by his own creation, this is the story of a man having his facade peeled back by his creation, revealing the monster that was always there.

Peter's relationship with Otto is beautifully tragic, and the battle - along with it being the perfect test of how well you've learned the mechanics of the game - is the equally perfect culmination and catharsis for the hours of build up to this moment.

One of the best examples of a game weaving story and gameplay together for a superior experience. But not the best, oh no, that's for later on.

#6 Senator Armstrong - Metal Gear

This has got to be one of the most insane games ever made, and considering the pedigree of the people who made it, that's saying a lot. Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance couldn't be any more different in tone, characterization, and definitely SCALE from its mainline series, Metal Gear Solid, but unlike Metal Gear Survive there's an actually great game here so it hardly matters.

And the culmination of all of this is Senator Armstrong, or as I like to call him, what every Republican WISHES they were. This bottomlessly corrupt and physically unstoppable U.S Senator has been messing with Raiden throughout the entire game, and has left him staring helplessly down a future of nuclear war for the sake of - ironically - making the world better in the long run.

But Raiden's mama didn't raise no quitter, he has a mission, he has a goal, he has a REALLY big sword. And all the righteous fury needed to use it. The battle is one of the most intense and insane bosses that Platinum games has ever put out, and mind you, this is the company that ended Bayonetta with you throwing GOD into the sun and cremating her.

It'll take every skill you've learned and a good amount of luck, but like all great final bosses, it feels so damn good when you win.

#5 Calamity Ganon - Legend of Zelda Breath Of Wild

Considering that the entire game is built around building yourself up for this one confrontation, the fight against Calamity Ganon had no business being anything less than one of the best of all time.

There are several ways you can approach this fight, mostly because you can literally fight him whenever it pleases you. Sure, you're TOLD to go to the four sacred beasts and get them back on your side, but it's just there to make the fight easier for you. Any equipment you get, any side missions you complete, all build up as one long training montage for the final battle.

But no matter when you begin this battle, it is utterly glorious. Sure this version of Ganon has basically no personality to him, leaving us without the pathos that made characters like Wind Waker's Ganondorf so compelling an antagonist, but never let it be said that the bastard doesn't make you WORK for that victory.

Even at your most equipped, you'll likely come out of that fight feeling like you just barely survived, and yet feel wholly satisfied. Exactly what a final boss needs to do.

#4 Poseidon - God Of War 3

The primary purpose of any good boss battle is to act as an exam testing the player on how well they've learned the tools and tricks given to them by the game, either by giving them an equally strong opponent, or by giving that opponent a strategy that can only be countered by applying those tricks and tools in a creative way.

And then there's Poseidon. Poseidon is NOT a test, he's the first lesson.

The fight against Poseidon is literally the first thing you're asked to do when you take control of Kratos in God Of War 3. First you take out his henchmen, then you inform him that your friend Gaia does not enjoy him putting his hands on her and that he should show her the proper respect by leaving...in the form of slicing his arms off and punching him into a mountain. And then you finish it all off with a good old fashioned quick time event shot from Poseidon's perspective. Culminating in the most brutal QTE in the series, where you use L3 and R3 to have Kratos jam his thumbs into Poseidon's eyes.

It's the most different boss battle on this entire list, because it doesn't ask what you've learned, it's the one teaching you.

#3: Gwyn, Lord Of Cinder - Dark Souls

Choosing the best Dark Souls boss for this list, hell choosing just one out of the entire From Software library, was a herculean task. But in the end, you just gotta hail to the king.

Gwyn, Lord Of Cinder is the only bad guy in the original Dark Souls that you KNOW you're gonna have to go toe to toe with at some point. Whereas other monsters get the drop on you, are obstacles in your path, or are necessary to make yourself stronger, Gwyn is looming over the horizon as a constant reminder that no matter how strong the enemy you're facing now is, you're nowhere near done yet.

In a game where two or three good hits from a random mook can put you out to pasture regardless of how good your armor is, it's hard to convey just how hard Gwyn hits you. If you don't have your timing down pat, roll harder and faster than Sonic working in a bakery on crack, and know exactly when to take the shot, you'll be dead in seconds.

And that's not even getting into the atmosphere of this fight. If you know the backstory to all of this nonsense, then you know just how sad this fight is, and how much of a tragedy the character of Gwyn is.

#2 Mr. Freeze - Batman Arkham Night

If Paul Dini is involved in your Batman project, you bet your ass that Mr Freeze is gonna show up at some point. And thankfully, he not only brought the great writing that makes this character so compelling, but he also brought one of the best boss fights ever.

The setup is pretty simple, one could even say the fight comes out of nowhere. After working with batman for most of the game, Mr Freeze suddenly turns on Batman when he doesn't immediately do what he asks. But that's forgivable because the ensuing fight is absolute aces.

because Mr Freeze knows how Batman operates, he has his suit adapt every time Batman pulls a trick on him to get the drop on him. Jump out at him from the floor vents? He'll just freeze them solid. Kick him from a vantage point? Oh look, no more gargoyles. Sneak up behind him? Activates drones that detect whenever you're near.

Fortunately you only have to hit him 3 times before the fight is done, so don't worry about making a mistake and running out of options completely. but the amount of ways in which you can explore the fight is downright mind boggling. You will NEVER play this boss fight the same way twice.

#1 Xehanort Kingdom Hearts 3

14 years of waiting, and by god it was worth it.

That's both true of the entirety of Kingdom Hearts 3, and of its final boss. After working through his entire organization and making SURE they stay the hell down this time around, Sora comes face to face with the big man himself, and his three magic clones. The fight starts with Sora, Mickey and Riku taking on the three other versions of Xehanort, in a fight best described as absolute chaos.

After you finally put down the three fakes, you corner Xehanort in a pocket dimension made to look like Xehanort's childhood home, Scala Ad Caelum, the ancestral home of the keyblade wielders. No more tricks, no more last minute escapes or backup plans. You and Xehanort have run each other down to your last tricks. Win or lose, it ends here.

The fight is nothing short of brutal, with Xehanort shifting and changing his world to give him as much of an advantage as possible. And even when he throws out those tricks and fights you one on one, the old codger hits like a bullet train and moves about as fast. Make no mistake, you need to EARN your victory here. But it's all worth it to finally put the old bastard in the dirt.

Sure his death isn't the screaming burning hellfire we might have preferred, but that's not really what this series is about so it's all good. And it's worth it for - without question - the best boss battle of the decade.
