Deduct tithes straight from workers’ salaries, Archbishop begs govt The Archbishop of Kampala, Cyprian Kizito Lwanga, has suggested that the government of Uganda deduct tithe from workers’ salaries. Speaking during a mass, the Catholic Archbishop said many Christians don’t tithe and this affects church projects, reports Citizen Kenya. “Whenever we ask for tithe, everyone gives only what they have at that time. But the Bible says a tenth of whatever you earn belongs to the church,” said Archbishop Lwanga. “Give me your support as I front this proposal because it is good for us. Aren’t you tired of putting money in the baskets all the time?” Archbishop Lwanga said he wanted Uganda to go the German route, where Germans, who are registered as Catholics, Protestants or Jews have a church tax (Kirchensteuer) of 8-9 per cent deducted from their annual income. “I was told Germans made agreements with their government to deduct monthly tithe from their salaries and forward it to the church and this money they use to build and renovate their churches,” he added. https://punchng.com/deduct-tithes-straight-from-workers-salaries-archbishop-begs-govt/ Mynd44 OAM4J Lalasticlala |

Government should do what he says! The Holy Spirit said "tax", but the Archbishop heard "tithe". 1 Like |

This is a story from about a year ago... and leaves out Lwanga's later clarifying remarks. Lwanga said that he was misquoted and misunderstood: https://www.newvision.co.ug/new_vision/news/1491848/meant-about-tithing-salaries-cyprian-lwanga “When I talked about involving government, I did not mean Central Government introducing a tax and collecting it under its institutes like URA, but I was referring to all those in position of governance who are in charge of paying people’s salaries to assist those who would like to support the Church, have their tithe deducted from their salaries and forwarded to the Church,” he explained. So according to him, what he was asking was that the government give people the option of automatically having some percentage of their salary donated to their church if they wanted. |

RandomGuy48:Love "the option. Just thought I had that already. I can go church on Sunday and exercise it or set up a direct debit from my bank. He's sneaky, is what I think. Holy Ghost said "tax" and he's doing satanic verses on it and should just own up he goofed! |

budaatum:Well, I believe the advantage of having it deducted automatically is one of convenience, you can just set it up and not have to manually figure out anything else. In regards to bank accounts, is it possible to do that with a bank account, set it up so that a particular percentage of your salary gets automatically re-routed somewhere else? It might be, but I'm not sure. I suppose that does require you get your salary deposited directly into your account to work, though. At any rate, I thought it should be noted that he issued this clarification. One can judge for themselves how genuine it was. 1 Like 1 Share |

RandomGuy48:There's an advantage alright, for someone, and it is comvenient too. And thanks for the clarification. One's salary should end up in one's account eventually, either paid in directly by ones employer or deposited there oneself, or at least the portion of one's tithe could, and of course one can set up a direct debit from one's bank account to one's God, though I don't know about percentages neither. But that's not much of an issue unless one's salary varys often in which case just pay a little more - God wouldn't mind, or pay a little less and make up the difference every so often, with interest if one is so bothered. Personally though, government should be more concerned about collecting tax than paying tithe to a God, is what I think. And people themselves should think so too, or government should make them think so. You're after all going to spend threescore and ten on earth first and who's going to pay for government provided services and debt and corruption et al if not you? Besides, if you're paying for it, you're more likely to be more concerned that it's spent well and therefore hold government to account, which you can't do with the tithe you've paid to God. |
