General Yakubu Gowon, the Nigerian military head of state who was deposed in a coup on July 29th 1975, is filmed on his arrival at Gatwick Airport on Tuesday night, August 12th 1975, on his way to rejoin his family who were in London at the time of the putsch.

Gowon had arrived from Lome, the capital of Togo, where he had been staying since he left Uganda on August 1st. It was not known at the time whether Gowon would take his family to Togo. He was later granted leave to stay in the United Kingdom where he took up studies at Warwick University.

He studied Political Science and earned himself a doctorate for his thesis entitled "The Economic Community of West African States: A Study in Political and Economic Integration".
