It has started... It just has to be the foreign company "intervening", only to eventually dominate the market. Where do Nigerian investors have their own investment though; abroad?

This government policies do not favour the average Nigerians.
A bag of rice is more than 20K.
Rice farming/production in Nigeria is lower than the demand for it and would always be expensive.
For now, WE ARE NOT self sufficient in rice farming/production.
Nobody told us we are SELF SUFFICIENT in cassava and yam farming because these crops do well in Nigeria than most places in the world.
Rice productions do well in Thailand,China etc more than in Nigeria.
So,what happened to comparative advantage?

Nigeria needs long term economic planning for the future. Not this type that adversely affect the masses.
We do not forget that Nigeria is the headquarters of poverty in the world. Therefore, most people cannot afford the basic needs of life.
This government offers more pains than any other previous governments with poor economic planning.

Do you know how much forex is lost daily as a result of rice importation? Do you know how many jobs can be created as a result of boosting our local rice processing capacity?

The policy of banning importation of rice into the country will definitely cause the commodity to be scarce and more expensive at the beginning. But this is exactly the kind of conditions that will encourage massive investment into rice processing. With time we would see a stabilization of the price along with sufficiency.

This is what we should have been doing as a nation since we got our democracy, but it is unfortunate it wasn't so.
But we thank God we are getting things right in this nation after all.

This is a very good step in the right direction.
Everything will fall into pleasant places for us as a nation pretty soon.

God bless Nigeria.

if we don't produce at high quality, & cheap price, it's just a wasteful effort, because ppl will eat d smuggled ones..

talking about forex, don't they pay impprt duties? Now, they are creating more room for smuggling. You buy it less than N10k outside the country & sell close to N30k

IgbereTV reports that the yesterday, the Managing Director of Tiamini Rice Mill Limited, Aminu Ahmed said that an additional sum of $13,370,500 has been invested by Tiamin Rice Mill Limited to raise its production capacity from the current 320 tonnes to 1,520 tonnes per day.

Mr Ahmed made this known when he led the management team of the company on a courtesy call on the Indian High Commissioner to Nigeria, Abhay Thakur, in his office in Abuja.

The MD said the policy of the present administration, especially the ban on smuggling and the interventions given to them by the Central Bank of Nigeria, have helped immensely in boosting local production of rice.

Mr Ahmed that the company which was established in 2016 in Kano started production of rice in 2018 with 320 tonnes per day would expand its existing production line from 320 tonnes to 920 tonnes next year, while a new production line would start production of 600 tonnes per day in Bauchi by May 2020.

He said, “We are now investing $13,370,500 to boost our production capacity to 1,520 tonnes per day. Already we have placed orders for all the machinery needed, and all arrangements are on top gear to meet the deadline we have set. By next year, we plan to become the biggest rice producers not only in Kano but in the whole country. Our watchword is quality and affordability. We produce one of the finest brands in Nigeria that can compete with foreign rice brands in terms of quality.

Mr Ahmed said that the durability of the Indian machines was secret behind the quality of Tiamin Rice. He then thanked the Indian High Commission for its support and sought further cooperation in the areas of easing trade relations between his company and Indian partners.

The high commissioner thanked Tiamin Rice for the courtesy call, and also for patronising Indian machines. Mr Thakur expressed hope that the policy of boosting local production would be sustained beyond the present administration to enable local industries in the country to grow.

While speaking to journalists after the visit, the Managing Director of Tiamin Rice expressed his appreciation to the federal government for their support in local rice production and to the state governments for the enabling environments given to the company.

By next year, the one they claim to produce now can't be enough, they are not serious, flood the Nigerian market with excess rice and watch rice price go down you are here talking of next year when December is around the corner what a mess

As we speak, Nigerian companies are producing processed rice of high quality. All we need now is more investment to increase production capacity.

Most of the people that are importing foreign rice source their forex within Nigeria. They then go and import containers of rice to Cotonu (because Nigeria doesn't allow importation of rice), they pay import duties to Benin republic and then smuggle the rice into Nigeria. This kinds of practice will not allow our local industry to survive.

LOCAL RICE PRODUCTTION IS A FRAUD.
Nigeria do not have a comparative advantage in rice production. Our yield per hecter is about 1.1 ton while countries like Thailand, Vietnam etc have yield per hecter of between 5 to 6 tonnes.

We can invest in things like Cassava and Sesame seed of which we are the highest producers in the world. The foreign exchange from this will be enough to import rice without harming the economy. Majority of rice farmers in the north are defaulting on loans because they simply can't compete with the cheaper smuggled brands.

The subsidy on rice production is over 170bn which is more than the budget of health and education combined.

At times I wonder who is advising this government.

(1) 1 bag is 50kg

(3) 20 bags = 1000kg (which is 1 ton)

It's not about being optimistic. if yr products can't compete with others, then it's not a good product.
High quality rice of less than 10k, they stopped importation to force you to eat substandard one of more than N20k... it makes no sense to me. Do you prefer the Nigerian brand? Is that what they eat in their houses??

if u see d number of people coming for food in churches these days, you won't say this

I bought Jollof rice the other day and noticed how stingy the portions had become. I complained about the small portions and they said rice is now dear in the market.

The import ban is daft and counterproductive.

Nigerias problem with rice is that the country lacks comparative advantage in its production. We can't produce it as efficiently and as competitively like some other countries. Nigeria does not have a problem producing rice. The problem is that the country lacks comparative advantage in its production.

Economists say you're better off importing a product you lack comparative advantage in. That resources are best directed at products you have comparative advantage in such as cocoa or Shea butter in the case in Nigeria for Instance.

However, Buhari does not give a damn about that. By fire by force, the country must be self sufficient in rice production. Because we lack comparative advantage in its production, the only way to achieve that goal, is to heavily protect rice farmers who produce very costly rice from being bankrupted from an inflow of cheap foreign rice.

The question I want to ask is: how does paying N20,000 a bag instead of 11,000 help the poor? I don't understand. It is worsened when you realise that the primary cause of hunger isn't the lack of food but actually the lack of money.

In a country where a third of children are chronically malnourished, it spells doom for them
