His nerves had finally calmed down so his thoughts were clearer, what went wrong with the operation? How did the Police know they were coming? these questions were racing through Mike's mind when a rustle in the nearby bushes startled him back to reality, "who's that!” he blurted out as he made to flee but instead grabbed the rifle and aimed in the direction of the noise, "psst, SEGUN.....segun, his voice lowered because of caution, did you hear that? I think someone’s coming" , it was pitch black and he felt the need to not give away his position, but his calls to Segun were received by a hollow and deafening silence, it did nothing to ease the already tensed up mind of his. Mike decided he wasn't going to wait around to find out who or what was moving in the bushes a few meters away from where he stood, he squeezed the trigger of the fully automatic rifle, but it didn't fire, "segun!! Guy!" Mike screamed in frustration and dived behind one of the concrete pillars, he wasn't sure why Segun was silent through the commotion and made for his leather bag to fetch his handgun, drawing a deep breadth he moved to open fire which scared off a huge rodent that was nibbling at a corner, Mike watched the vermin run into the bushes, he quickly ran over to where segun was and found his companion motionless, "Segun, guy how far" mike said kicking seguns legs which were stiff as a bamboo stick. Segun was dead, he had bled out sitting at that corner, in his right hand he held a cigarette he had hoped to light before taking the eternal bow, Mike sat down next to his body, pondering on his fate now that Segun was dead, he wasn't sure of what he had to do next, perhaps the package was all that mattered now, getting it to the Boss and requesting for an instant exfil sounded like the best line of action. But he had to make the rigorous journey to the capital, and hide seguns body. He found an abandoned classroom for that, then he inspected the rifle that disappointed him earlier and found its magazines were empty, the rifle was heavy and conspicuous, attributes he had no need for so he put it next to seguns body. Facing the only road that lead to the state highway Mike lit his dead colleague's cigarette, drawing a deep one in and exhaling the smoke as one who had very little to live for for, he proceeded to flag down a lorry heading towards the City of Enugu
