STOP WET LITTER IN BROILER HOUSES

To obtain maximum broiler production potential, management of the poultry house environment is essential. An important measure of a suitable environment is proper maintenance of poultry litter.

Litter is defined as excreted manure mixed with bedding material.

Both heating and ventilation systems must be continually monitored to ensure that the moisture content of the litter is controlled and the litter remains friable. If the moisture content becomes elevated and the litter is allowed to become "sealed," then the birds are being grown on a continually damp, slippery and sticky surface. This sealed litter is often referred to as being "caked." In this condition, the litter is simply saturated with water and the water is unable to escape. A severe litter moisture problem can result if large areas of the house floor surface are caked. It is more common, however, to find localized areas of caking near leaky watering cups, nipples, troughs or roofs. The litter in these house locations must be continually stirred, raked or replaced to prevent the problem from becoming worse.

If litter is not kept at an acceptable level, very high bacterial loads and unsanitary growing conditions may result producing odors (including ammonia), insect problems (particularly flies), soiled feathers, footpad lesions and breast bruises or blisters.

Expect carcass downgrading at the slaughter house when birds are reared under such poor conditions. In a well-managed broiler house, litter moisture normally averages between 25 to 35 percent.

Litter that is managed correctly with the moisture content kept within the acceptable range can save a farmer from disease problems and antibiotics burden.

caked litter must be removed between flocks and replaced with new litter.

There are several causes of wet litter. A number of control measures can help prevent wet litter problems.

WATERY DROPPINGS:
Diarrhea can be caused by nutrition and/or infectious agents. High intake of the minerals potassium, sodium, magnesium, sulfate or chloride can lead to excessive water consumption and wet droppings. If a wet litter problem occurs, feed levels of sodium and chloride (salt) should be determined. It is possible that a feed mixing error has occurred, resulting in an excess of salt in the diet. The water should be checked periodically for mineral concentrations, especially for sulfate and magnesium. Acidification of water plays an important role in keeping bacteria at bay !
Poor quality dietary fat or rancid fat can lead to wet fecal droppings. Likewise, using poor quality feed ingredients such as poorly dried maize, caked bran, rotten silver fish etc....will often result in excessively wet droppings.

To control wet droppings associated with some feed ingredients, it is usually necessary to use litter material that is good at absorption of water from litter for example coffee husks or rice husks.

Moldy Feed:
If broilers are provided moldy feed ingredients, consumption of mycotoxins may cause the droppings to be excessively wet. Mycotoxins are known to irritate the digestive tract and to cause marked pathological changes in the kidneys. Ochratoxin, Oosporin and Citrinin are mycotoxins known to cause these changes. Such changes can lead to increased water consumption and wet droppings. To prevent mycotoxins from becoming a problem, good quality feed ingredients must be used in both layer and broiler diets. Add sangromix active D in feed always because it has an ability to stop mycotoxins effect in the intestines.

Feed handling equipment must be cleaned and disinfected periodically. Caked and moldy feed lodged in equipment like feeders, serving plates, silos can contaminate feed as it passes through the equipment; thus any caked feed must be routinely removed.

Disease:
Numerous diseases cause poultry to excrete wet droppings. This effect may be primary where an infectious agent directly damages the alimentary canal resulting in diarrhea. Secondary effects may occur where birds go off feed but maintain water consumption, resulting in a higher moisture content of the droppings.

Coccidia infections result in direct damage to the gut and will result in wet droppings. Control of coccidiosis through improving litter hygiene, maintaining the litter dry, stopping feed spillage, and avoid pouring water on the floor as well as improving water quality.

if not controlled, coccidial infection may lead to necrotic enteritis and wet litter.

Bacterial infections caused by Escherichia coli, will also result in wet litter. In addition, several viruses phave been implicated as causative agents of diarrhea. Viruses associated with malabsorption of nutrients have an adverse effect on the consistency of the bird's droppings.
We should know that water quality is only determined is we know the bacteria load and virus load in the water together with PH of water.
Adding an acidifier to the water helps to reduce bacteria burden.

Climate Control and Equipment Failure:
Farmers have little or no control over the ambient temperature and humidity outside the poultry house. Nevertheless, temperature and humidity largely influence water consumption and impact litter quality. For example, high temperatures within a broiler house lead to increased water consumption and wet litter. When high humidity accompanies high temperatures the problem can become so severe that it becomes very difficult to properly maintain the litter in a dry and friable condition.

Leaking watering systems, when not maintained in good working order, can cause wet litter problems. The in-line water pressure must be just enough to stop water leaking.
Roofs should be leak-free and ventilation systems should move an adequate amount of air to keep litter moisture levels in the proper range.

Cleaning water pipes and drinkers. Flushing in broiler houses should be done every after 2 weeks to avoid bacteria build up in the pipes which may eventually cause disease and diarrhea.

Bedding Type
There are a limited number of bedding materials that can be used in broiler houses. Any material that is in contact with the birds must be nontoxic, and able to absorb water and subsequently release the moisture to the atmosphere. The material must be readily available in sufficient quantities. Most importantly, it must be economical. You can chose coffee husks or rice husks

Quality soft wood shavings are also used as bedding material but you should avoid saw dust as it causes irritation and respiratory problems.

*Conclusion*
Maintaining moisture levels of poultry house litter in the proper range is essential if the production potential of the flock is to be realized. To accomplish this, management practices must ensure that high quality feed is provided to the flock, disease organisms are not permitted to enter the premises, and adequate ventilation systems and quality bedding material are used.
Do not allow caked litter in a poultry house at all as this is the number 1 cause of coccidiosis, cough and flu and retarded growth.

How to nail your first 7 DAYS OF Brooding

1️⃣ Early placement of chicks in the house , access to fresh clean water and feed after arrival is important .

The time of transport from the hatchery to the farm should be as quick as possible .This is because the hatch window might be close to 12-24 hours after hatching and there is no need for further delay once you have collected your birds from the hatchery/sales point.

On placement, provide an hour of clean water mixed with glucose or Vitaflash , and wait to give feed until the one hour period of water is done. This helps to avoid constipation issues in chicks!

Once again, make sure good feed and fresh clean drinking water is readily available and easily accessible to reduce time for searching for feed and water by the newly arrived chicks. Please note that putting water/drinkers near pots or any other heat source is not good, when water is hot birds do not drink it.

Four hours after placement, randomly pick some of the chicks and check the crop fill .The target crop fill should be 85%. After 12hrs , it should be above 95%, and after 24hrs, the target crop fill should be above 98 to 100%.

2️⃣ Use of digestible raw materials in making feed for the chicks is necessary as their digestive system is not mature or procurement of chicks feed from reputable commercial feed manufacturer.

Don't compound your own feed if you are not an expertise in that field, instead purchase good an approved feed supplier within your locality to avoid stories that touch�.
You know yesterday some farmer complained about some feed type that made her sell off her 2 months Broilers, that had failed to growth....imagine selling those birds at 1,200 !!!! Really touching. Another lost 300 chicks in the first week just because feeds made chicks sick! Its touching.

3️⃣ Place highly hygienic materials that have been adequately sanitized and disinfected in the brooding house. You should know that the chicks' immune response is not fully developed any health compromise might be more devastating for young chicks compared to older ones.
One major route of disease entry in chicks is the intestine....so have your chicks' intestines protected!

Biosecurity measures like foot baths, disinfection of premises and disinfection of equipment should be done using a strut and trusted disinfectant.

Don't joke with biosecurity. If you miss it, then you miss out. Restrict access to your day old chicks , have some workers dedicated to look after the brooder but not allowing everyone to enter, and these workers should not be working anywhere else! all equipment should have been washed, disinfected and sanitised with appropriate disinfectants.

A designated Uniform/ clothing's for the purpose of caring for your birds should be worn by the person/stockman caring for the birds.

If not, once immunity of your birds is compromised..... be ready to start counting your losses from the onset.

4️⃣ Provide breed specific diet of high quality as this will enable the chicks to consume the amount needed for adequate growth .For broilers, you should give broiler feed. Which has both starter and finisher.

5️⃣ Avoid overcrowding as this leads to competition for feed and water And causes pecking in chicks. Moreover, this will lead ultimately to a high number of lighter birds that will end up being at a disadvantaged when it is time for scrambling for feed in the midst of other heavier birds in the flock. These lighter birds that you created in the brooder are the same birds you will see in your poultry house being chased around, and hiding in laying boxes and perches. Over crowding leads to poor growth and low production percentage when birds grow!

6️⃣ Ventilation. Much as we advise that you keep the brooder sealed off from draught, we do not mean that you deny the birds air exchange. Now, do not just seal off everywhere! Leave some little breathing space in the brooder!

Do not leave ammonia to build up in the house, open up during day for the ammonia and dust to get out.

Afterthought 1
Try to achieve good uniformity. i.e birds falling within similar average body weight. In layers, lighter and heavier birds are difficult to design feed programme for.
You can separate them and grow each group together to allow light birds gain weight faster and catch before laying begins. This will enable a large percentage of the whole flock to attain peak production at the same time.

Afterthought 2
Remember, the main aim is to maximise profit in poultry by stopping disease challenges, reduced mortality, reduced antibiotics expenses and veterinary bills, and keeping them healthy and productive.

��� HOW TO BOOST THE GROWTH OF YOUR BROILER CHICKENS.


��The dream of every broiler breeder is to reach very good weights, with low mortality and to breed birds in the shortest possible time. This helps them get a better return on their investment. Let's go over some of the key points on how to get the best out of chicks.

Note: the quality of the chicks is important and we advise breeders to obtain a good breed of broiler from reputable sources.

� 1.) Thermoregulations / Temperature management

A day-old chick cannot regulate its own body temperature. Therefore, we must create a favorable warm environment for the chicks.

Start warming up the building 5-10 hours before the chicks arrive. If you are brooding in a new building, it is best to warm up the house at least 24 hours before the chicks arrive. A chick on cold ground will refrain from eating and will be inactive. The most critical time for your chickens is the first five days. Gradually over 2 weeks, the chick becomes more able to regulate its body temperature. The temperature at the chickens should range from 31 to 33 degrees centigrade and gradually stabilize at 21 degrees by 28 days. Keeping the chicks at a high temperature will result in loss of energy and poor growth.

In general, smaller chicks need a higher brooding temperature than larger ones. A simple and effective way to check how your chick is feeling is to hold her legs against your cheek. If you feel that they are cold, you should increase the temperature in the house. Or enter the building with bare feet, so that they are stepping on your feet, you can easily feel if they are hot or cold!

Proper temperature management will ensure high weight gain, lower FCR, lower cull rate, lower mortality, and virtually reduce the costs of growing chickens.

� 2.) Monitoring

Check your chicks after 24 hours to see if they have been housed properly. Do a crop fill test on the chicks to see if they have access to food and water! Randomly select 100 chicks. 95% of chicks should have full crops with a mixture of feed and water. If this goal is not met, go through a checklist and see if something is wrong, for example checking the amount of food in the feeders and on the floor (in fact, it is always a good idea to provide trays. plastic for food in the first week!), water quality and accessibility, water temperature, house temperature, feed quality (pellet size), number of chickens problems in the building can all contribute to this characteristic.



� 3.) Weight gain on day 7

The 7 day old chick weights are a great way to see how well they have started. Chicks should quadruple their day-old weight in the first 7 days. Each gram of weight gain at 7 days will give an additional 6 grams at 35 days!

*5 REASONS WHY YOUR BROILERS DOESN'T GROW UNIFORMLY BUT SOME GROW BIG AND SOME GROW SMALL AFTER FEEDING EQUALLY.*

Have You Ever Bought Day Old Broilers And After 2weeks Of Feeding You Found Out That Their Growth Is Not Uniform ?

It can be so painful and saddening after spending thousands of naira to buy birds, to buy feeds, to buy their vaccines and medications and their other essential needs and later discovered that after all those efforts your birds are not growing or some are growing more than the others or you just discovered that your birds are not uniform.I can tell that kind of situation can be so disheartening and depressing and make you want to give up on poultry farming. But wait hold on don’t give up there are lot of things you didn’t know and didn’t learn about before you started your poultry farm, and this lack of knowledge I bet you will cost you more than what you will have used to acquire the necessary knowledge before starting.

Now straight to business do you know broilers are not just broilers in Nigeria ? the hatcheries that sell broilers to us in Nigeria sells different types of breeds to us that’s why if you buy For example agrited (Ross 308) last month and this month you bought Zartech (Cobb 500) you will have different results. And if you don’t know about this before, have written a post about it just scroll up in the group to find the post.

HERE ARE THE 7REASONS WHY BIRDS DONT GROW UNIFORMLY.

1) The hatchery you ordered your birds from or the type of broiler breed you were supplied.- The first reason your birds don’t bring out quality is because they are not from quality hatcheries so if you buy birds from suppliers because the birds they advertised to you are far cheaper than the hatcheries that produces quality birds your birds are very likely not to grow uniformly . and you may end up with results you won’t like.

2)You don’t prioritize the first 5days of your birds.
While every day in the life of a broiler chicken is important to their growth and the first 5 days can make or mar the life of your chicks. In other words, what you do or fail to do in the first five days can impact your chicks throughout the rearing season, be it 6 weeks or more. So, it is important that you pay close attention to your chicks and give them the necessary attention needed to give them a good start.Get a good multivitamins,Antibiotics and Anticoccidiosis for them and also feed them professional or good starter feed for their first 7days.

3)Your male birds always grow fast and are always bigger than the female birds.
Males birds eat well and faster than female birds and because of this, even if your birds are healthy and you have done all things to make them have same weight they still won’t because the females will always weigh lower than the males

4)You don’t lay good foundation for your birds because you feed them low quality feeds even at Day 1 ? Oh no no don’t do this don’t ever do this because if you do you have already caused problems for them. Feeding you birds low quality feed starting from day one will make them give you results you don’t want to have in the next few weeks.


5)Another reason why you may later end up with non uniform birds is because of disease outbreak and this will occur if you Don’t care for your birds and don’t brood them with the required heat they need at day old. If you also give your birds low quality feeds they wont be able to build their immune system that will help them resist and fight against diseases and this will also make you spend more money on drugs and medications. If you brood your birds well you will spend less on their medications.

16 STEPS FARMERS TAKE IN BROODING DAY OLD CHICKS TO ENSURE THEIR BIRDS HAVE HIGH SURVIVAL RATE.

1)Upon chicks’ arrival, do the unboxing exercise as quickly as possible, count them and dip each chick’s beak into a waterer to be sure that it gets a drink.

2)While you are unboxing, check for deformed chicks and those with an unhealed navel. Treat them to prevent omphalitis.

3)Check for underweight chicks and separate them from the rest. They might end up being runts. Separating them will allow you to manage them properly, thus, giving them a better chance of survival.

4)Vaccinate them against Newcastle and Marek's diseases if they hasn’t been done at the hatchery.

5)Lunch them into their new environment and Observe the chicks closely and see how they respond to the heat.

6)The chicks’ behavior will tell you whether the brooder temperature is correct. If they huddle close to the heat source, it is too cold; if they crowd the brooder guard or crowd at angle 90 degrees of the space you put them. It is too hot! If they are evenly dispersed, you got the heating right.

7)Check the distribution of the chicks often for the first 2 weeks, and see that they have feed and water even at night. Watch the chicks every 30 minutes continuously for the first few days. If any is ill, remove such.

The first few days, chicks will pick at anything; they cannot tell a feeding area from the rest of the floor, so it is wise to have feed scattered over a large area. Put newspaper or cut cardboard boxes down on the floor and scatter feed on them to supplement the chick-sized feeders.

9)During the brooding stage, chicks will eat through the night since light is available continuously. They should never be without feed for more than 30 minutes at a time (the same is true for mature birds during daylight).

10)Spend time every day just observing the flock. As they grow, see if they are all about the same size and are putting out feathers at about the same rate.If so, the chicks probably are healthy, from good stock, and receiving a good feed. Watch for any inactive chicks. Those that standstill for more than 10 minutes are most likely sick.

11)On the third day, allow the chicks to finish the feed in the feeders. From then on, fill the feeders half full. If chicks are eating well, remove the paper or cardboard.

12)For the rest of the chickens’ lives, completely change their water every day at dawn and in the early afternoon, rinsing the waterers out as you do so. Chickens should have water available at all times.

13)On the fourth day, begin looking for signs of coccidiosis. If there is a serious outbreak, take immediate action. Be alert for coccidiosis until the flock is at least 12 weeks old. On the sixth day, be sure that there is evenly disperse grit (stone particles) in the feeders to supplement the ones in the commercial feed.

14)On the seventh day, the 1st Lasota vaccination is recommended.

15)On the twenty-first day, provide larger feeders.

16)On the eighty-fourth day, increase feed and water space. Begin a lighting
program, if appropriate.

COMMON MISTAKES LIVESTOCK FARMERS MAKE IN DRUG USAGE

While drug usage is being de-emphasized in advanced climes, Africa (Nigeria inclusive) is not prepared to even deploy antibiotics correctly.

In most developed economies, farm biosecurity measures remains the rule of thumb. The disorderly practice on this side of the globe makes the use of therapeutic agents inevitable.

Faulty Practices I Have Seen Includes:

1. Farmers deciding for themselves what medications to use based on previous history and experiences.

2. Prescription from a fellow livestock farmer based on personal guesses.

3. Prescription from untrained shop attendant or drug vendor.

4. Hasty prescription from a trained animal health personnel without proper diagnosis of the problem.

5. Unwillingness to access pharmaceutical intervention despite the absence of any biosecurity protocols.

6. Excessive and unbridled drug usage premised on the assumption that livestock thrive better on a barrage or plethora of medicines.

7. Multiple drug combinations intended to check all manifested signs.

8. Under-dosing of sick animals due to ignorance or a deliberate measure of austerity.

9. Over-dosing of sick animals to achieve 'accelerated' recovery.

10. Deciding for cheaper drug brands with doubtful efficacies.

Consequences of the aforementioned:

1. Multiple drug combinations may lead to drug to drug interactions

2. Drug interactions may lead to nullification, reduced efficacy or toxicity.

3. Growth depression could occur.

4. Abnormal body functions may be noticed.

An Outline Of Incongruent Drug Combinations:

1. Drugs like Gentamicin, Neomycin, etc., must not be combined with Penicillins.

2. Don't combine Enrofloxacin, Ciprofloxacin, Norfloxacin, etc., with Calcium or substances containing Calcium.

3. Non Steroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDS) in combination with Gentamicin, Neomycin etc could lead to kidney damage.

4. It is contra-indicated to combine Tetracyclines with Calcium compounds

5. Never concurrently administer Morphine with Atropine.

6. It is unsafe to combine herbal preparations with synthetic drugs.

7. Do not combine Sulpha based drugs with multivitamins.

8. It is not right to combine multivitamins with herbal preparations.

9. It is safer to administer Enrofloxacin, Ciprofloxacin, Norfloxacin etc without multivitamins.

10. Do not administer biocides like Iodine compounds less than 7days after vaccine administration.

Drugs administration is a sensitive matter, always consult with your Veterinarian for directions.
