The man is just grandstanding. You cannot force any telco to adjust their rates. The telcos are a perfect free market, you do not like one, you move to another. Each have their own peculiar operating challenges which NCC cannot do anything about.

Regulation of the price of petrol is one of the reasons for moribund refineries and a lack of investment in refineries. Because return on investment is not guaranteed

The Minister of Communication and Digital Economy, Dr Isa Ali Pantami has extended the deadline given to the Nigerian Communications Commission NCC, on the reduction of data prices in the country.

The Minister had issued a five-day ultimatum to the regulatory body to meet with other stakeholders with a view to review downward the prices of data in the country.

He had argued that his office was inundated with complaints from concerned Nigerians about the high cost of data compared with countries with lesser population.

However, in a statement issued in Abuja on Saturday by the Minister’s spokesperson, Uwa Suleiman, the Minister noted that it had received NCC letter that action is being taken on the matter.

The statement reads : Following the five day ultimatum issued by the Honourable Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami to the Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC) on the 5th of November 2019, to resolve the challenges of illegal data deductions and review the cost of data downward, the commission has risen up to the task and efforts are in top gear to carry out the Minister’s directives.

“In a letter from the Executive Vice Chairman (EVC), received by the office of the Honourable Minister on the 8th of November 2019, the telecommunications regulator, intimated Dr Pantami of the strategies been taken to stem the tide of short changing subscribers by Mobile Network Operators.

“In its earlier attempts to tackle the challenges, the Commission informed the Honourable Minister that it had issued a directive to all Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) on the attendant penalties associated with Automatic Renewal and Forceful Subscription to Data and Value Added Services. The penalties include considerable financial sanctions on the erring operator.

“The letter stated that, in response to the directive of the Honourable Minister, the Commission reviewed the Nigerian Communications Act of 2003 on its rule-making powers and process. The Commission is in the process of carrying out a study on the End-of-Session Notification for Data Services and depending on the outcome, may issue a direction in accordance with the Act.

“Furthermore, in a bid to protect consumers, the Commission also notified the Honourable Minister of their regulation of the initial directive to include refunds to the consumer in established cases of unauthorized subscription.

“The Nigerian Communications Commission also assured the Honourable Minister that it has been working assiduously round the clock to enforce the Federal Government’s directives and has requested the good graces of the Minister to extend the deadline which expires today, 8th November 2019, to enable it properly re-strategise and fully implement long term solutions as directed, to the challenges.

“Dr Pantami has graciously granted an extension with the understanding that the Commission will resolve these issues within the shortest time possible.

“The Honourable Minister, hereby assures the general public that the current administration will neither tolerate acts of injustice nor the shortchanging of its citizens as it is working tirelessly to ensure that subscribers get full value for their money. “

You can regulate quality of service. You cannot regulate price. Is that too much for you to understand? If I choose to charge 2k per Gb , you have the option of moving to a different provider. These are not the days of nitel

Oga, please stop that.

You know nothing about what you are saying.

Who told you regulation of price of petroleum products is responsible for the bad state of the refineries? It is not true...corruption is.

Do you even have the slightest idea what these telcos post as profit after tax? Regulating telcos is an important part of enabling business as communication, just like energy, is the lifeblood of any business and economy.

With Nigeria's huge population, it's needful that telcos are properly regulated to ensure that they are not taking undue advantage. No one is saying that they should not recoup their investments.

I am surprised you said that no one can force them to adjust their prices. That's actually ridiculous. Recall that they aren't also being forced to stay. They are at liberty to leave.

If you know about economy of scale, then you should reckon that a country the size of Nigeria should enjoy cheaper data and call rates than several other countries.

The whole talk about peculiar challenges and what have you, makes no sense at all.

At the end of the day the govt is to blame.

The enabling environment is not there at all. The cost of doing business is very high and the telcos just pass this cost on to the end users.the same applies basically for every business from banks to telcos to even the common trader on the street.

Telcos and their logistics partner pay through their noses to keep the bases stations running bearing in mind that these bases stations run on diesel 24-7. Each also must have a security guard on site otherwise vandals come and steal their equipment.

I recently read it online somewhere that it cost more to transport a 40ft container from lagos to the South East than it cost to ship same from China by sea. Also, the cost of clearing the same container is the same as the cost of sea freight and this is minus the uncessary delays at the port. Roads are bad, police check points every where etc.

So let govt do the basic which is to create the enabling environment, deploy the basic necessary infrastructure And then they can talk.

Asking Telco to reduce cost of data is not an issue. All they will to do is migrate y'all back to 3G or even 2G which is a cheaper infrastructure to maintain and comply with the minister's directive.

Instead of us to hold govt accountable and demand for the basic things they should do we are busy gagging the few private sector firms trying to make this country work. Same way people will come and be abusing dangote.

I know of a cluster of bases stations in the niger delta that for you to get diesel to the area to power the base stations you have to pay almost five times the cost of the diesel as bribe to the militants controlling the area. At some point the telcos even hire some of the militants as security men paying and housing them. The same militants will go and steal the expensive base station equipment and sell in the open market causing service disruption.

At the end of the day telcos got tired and shut down like 15 base station in that location and set up same in a neighbouring country.

I know of banks that spend billions on diesel yearly

God bless Nigeria

but you just wake up and start shouting data should be cheap

What they post as profit has no bearing on this discourse. They are a private company and they have the responsibility of creating wealth for their shareholders.

Economics of scale will only make sense if the cost of doing business is low.

You don't expect them to price below their per unit cost of data deployment do you?

And yea petrol price regulation is one of the major underlying reasons why the refineries aint working.

Let market forces control petrol price and see the amount of investments that will flow into that sector.

What did the Hon. Minister order NCC to do and what what did NCC tell the MNOs? Quite different!

The Hon. Minister ordered a reduction in the high cost of data and NCC is talking about illegal deduction and forceful subscription.

The NCC seems to be happy and possibly getting something from the proceeds of high cost of data from the MNOs, they are subtly trying to deceive the Hon. Minister and divert attention from the main issue.

You're the first to make a reasonable comment, Why are there so many people in nairaland with shallow mindset?

NCC is not doing what the minister ask, rather they are shifting the focus and still want extension of that.......
