The man is just grandstanding. You cannot force any telco to adjust their rates. The telcos are a perfect free market, you do not like one, you move to another. Each have their own peculiar operating challenges which NCC cannot do anything about.

Regulation of the price of petrol is one of the reasons for moribund refineries and a lack of investment in refineries. Because return on investment is not guaranteed

This is just the man saving face
Every sane country has tight price control of essential commodities especially from conglomerates.

There is no such thing as complete free market. Just imagine if NURTW nationwide decide to double their prices, what happens to inflation

can you prove this, or are you just pulling this claim out of the ether?
do you even understand the implications of 'tight price control?' in these circumstances where things do not remain equal?
there has been no light for the past two days. was service from the telcos disrupted?

i think we should bring nitel back, so you will understand what a true incompetent monopoly is. when you start queuing by public phone booth to make international calls, your eye will clear

Exactly. They guy is just trying to toe populist direction and be hailed as doing something... It won't last. We all know that pricing is fixed based on the factors the telcos have to manage.

Minister just be giving wrong directives upandan without considering all of these. Same way he suspended cash payments at NIPOST in favor of POS and Bank teller payments forgetting NIPOST s key to improving financial inclusion and eCommerce in the Country.

The minister is behaving like an illiterate when he should focus more on regulatory compliance on the part of the telcos who engage in fraudulent promos, outright data & talktime credit scam and other types of consumer abuse right under the nose of the NCC.

All the lazy youth hailing him now should not complain when he once again orders the telcos to double data prices a year or two down the line.

What they post as profit has no bearing on this discourse. They are a private company and they have the responsibility of creating wealth for their shareholders.

Economics of scale will only make sense if the cost of doing business is low.

You don't expect them to price below their per unit cost of data deployment do you?

And yea petrol price regulation is one of the major underlying reasons why the refineries aint working.

Let market forces control petrol price and see the amount of investments that will flow into that sector.

Cost of doing business, either low or high, cannot justify extortion or exploitation.

I am an entrepreneur as well. You don't create wealth for shareholders by reaping people off. Don't forget that government also has a responsibility to protect her citizens, and that is irrespective of ramifications.

Please, drop the price regulation argument as it relates to failure of our refineries. It doesn't hold water. Isn't OPEC regulating volume and setting price at the global stage? Why are there still functional refineries around the world?

As for market forces controlling prices of oil products, the industry is different. The players are few. It isn't the same as with Agriculture, FMCG etc.

Please, economy of scale makes better sense when the cost of doing business is high than when it is so low. Stop being theorical.

And my big question is: why can't the telcos leave when they think the environment isn't benefiting? Why do you prefer that government turn a blind eye to the plight of millions of her citizens to allow telcos 'create wealth' for a few tens of her shareholders?

There is nothing wrong with government calling for necessary adjustments to enhance value for her citizens, absolutely, nothing is wrong with that.

Good Moves. Honestly, this Country's Telecommunication Services are wholely exploiting us with this data charges. But the govt should also reduce their tax charges to these companies too to enable them make some adjustments. I wish government of Benin Republic will take this same action because these telecommunication services is milking us dry. It's even worse here than in Nigeria. Data is more exhorbitant in this Benin Rep. than in NIGERIA. Talon should do something about it abeg

The only way data prices can drop is if government revived Nigerian Telecoms, NITEL and provides citizens with very cheap 5G data services.

This will crash the market and force others to up their game.

chachanga:
Entire system's jinxed.

Without fixing Power and Petroleum sectors to yield affordable products and services promptly, many private sector concerns will keep suffering until hardships before shutting down unceremoniously.

Telcos have genuine concerns and terribly costly overheads to grapple with. Diesel costs for powering base stations (Masts) alone is enough not to consider diesel/inverter/solar combo overheads for running NoC's, support staff etc. A week Naira plus jumping local inflation drives up demands for higher staff pay as well as costlier overheads for tech know-how & equipment imports esp. without facility of import waivers.

But such challenges shouldn't equate to the abysmal connectivity & poor Quality of Service (QoS) plus daylight-robbery billing and data zapping regime Nigerians are now subjected to. That's a reflection of our corrupt Nigerian Factor eating deep into policy implementation on regulation, transparency/accountability, Consumer Rights etc.

If he's truly committed, some heads have to roll both ways so that pple can have value for money. New products and tariff package deals must be brought onboard. Data minimum sub quantity/costs, data sub expiration, rollover and bonus policies must be reviewed. Clear improvements must be noticeable in the so-called high-speed broadband data deals; "unlimited data" no suppose be for mouth only! Lack of service availability beyond certain levels must be penalizable on reporting because Glo is fond of selling Awoof-data plans that nobody will get to use till it expires!

Hence as long as concessions will be made on all sides, things won't continue to be business as usual but Nigerians shouldn't expect their Telcos to turn stones-to-bread overnight in the present crippling business environment, na other ways to deceive una dem just dey come up with, packaging the same sh!t in different wrappers! tongue
The bolded text is what the minister should address instead of reduction in data price

Quite right. The unfortunate thing though is that the 'masses' won't see it that way. All they want is reduced everything. Basic economics most don't understand. I love reduced prices myself, but it's important that it can be justified and sustained economically and commercially.

The so called countries with smaller population have far better electricity, don't have local government staff harassing every base station looking for money, have better ports, better roads etc, so maybe that's why its cheaper, but as usual we like to apply government fiat to everything.
