Nigeria has second-largest number of child brides —UNICEF
The United Nations Children’s Fund says Nigeria has the second-largest number of child brides in the world, with 23 million girls and women married out as children in the country, thereby ending their educational strive.
Mr Bhanu Pathak, Chief of Field Office, UNICEF Nigeria, Bauchi Field Office, stated this in Bauchi State on Saturday at a Youth Talk organised in commemoration of the 30th Anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of the Child.
“Too many Nigerian children and young people are being left behind, especially when it comes to education.
“Nigeria has the world’s highest number of out-of-school children; more than 10.5 million Nigerian children are not in school.
“Nigeria also has the second largest number of child brides in the world with 23 million girls and women married as children, and as such, ending their education,” said Pathak.
He reiterated UNICEF’s resolve to foster a stronger partnership with the Nigerian government at the federal and state levels for the realisation of children’s rights.
In his remarks, Mr Sagir Musa, the President, Youth Advocates For Education, Bauchi, said, the challenges of young people included high rate of unemployment, lack of basic life skills, drug abuse, political thuggery and illiteracy among others.
He commended the state government for collaborating with UNICEF, Bauchi Field Office, to organise such forum which gave young people the opportunity to have their voices heard and take decisions on matters that affected their lives.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the ceremony was organised by UNICEF and Bauchi State Universal Basic Education Board.

And so fvck what?

I'm not a fan of child marriage or whatever, but I hate how this stupid imperialists always want to impose their way of life on us.

Centuries back, the hausas/fulanis have been marrying young girls and the culture lived on. It wasn't a danger to their religion rather it gave less room for being promiscuous

To them, Child bride is bad but they think Gay/lesbian is a normal way of life?
How much of these neo-colonialism do we have to suffer all in the name of "modernization"

This is what Karl max described as Cultural Hegemony

Is it not even better to marry them as children than to have the epidemic in our hands that has made 75% of our girls olosho?
If T boss and Tacha them were married as child brides it could have saved us the societal headaches we are encountering now

The victims are the child being married not you, Mr. zombie.
You don't remember your "culture" and love the "imperialists" when
you want to criticize your political opponents.

Remove your blinding lenses and see that teenage pregnancy is not confined to Northern Nigeria. Osun State has a lot of underage pregnant girls, as do UK and USA

The rate of teenage pregnancy in the United Kingdom is relatively high, when compared with other developed countries; the only other Western countries with higher teenage pregnancy rates are the United States and New Zealand. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teenage_pregnancy_in_the_United_Kingdom

In all, child marriage should not be encouraged.
