Soyinka To DSS: Release Sowore And Save Nigeria From Embarrassment by TMSMedia: 8:54am On Nov 13, 2019
IgbereTV reports that Nigerian Noble Laureate, Wole Soyinka, said that Department of State Services(DSS) has to release Omoyele Sowore and save Nigeria from further embarrassment from the international community, as Sowore's continued detention is gaining international attention.

This is contained in a statement from Soyinka on Wednesday.

Recall that the DSS has refused to comply with a court order for Sowore’s release. The agency had said it received the court order for his release, but that no one had come to receive him. But it refused to release him still after his lawyers and some civil rights activists came forward. On Tuesday, agents of the service shot at protesters who had gone to the agency’s headquarters to demand his release.

Soyinka said, ”It is heart-warming to witness the determined efforts of “Concerned Nigerians” in defence of these rights. Predictably, the ham-fisted response of the Directorate of State Security (DSS) continues to defy the rulings of the court. The weaponry of lies having been exploded in their faces, they resort to what else? Violence! Violence, including, as now reported, the firing of live bullets,” he said.

“Why the desperation? The answer is straightforward: the government never imagined that the bail conditions for Sowore would ever be met. Even Sowore’s supporters despaired. The bail test was clearly set to fail! It took a while for the projection to be reversed, and it left the DSS floundering. That agency then resorted to childish, cynical lies. It claimed that the ordered release was no longer in their hands, but in Sowore’s end of the transfer. The lie being exploded, what next? Bullets of course!

“Such a development is not only callous and inhuman, it is criminal. It escalates an already untenable defiance by the state. As I remarked from the onset, this is an act of government insecurity and paranoia that merely defeats its real purpose. And now – bullets? This is no longer comical. Perhaps it is necessary to remind this government of precedents in other lands where, even years after the event, those who trampled on established human rights that generate homicidal impunity are called to account for abuse of power and crimes against humanity.”

“Enough of this charade, nothing more than a display of crude, naked power. Release Omoyele Sowore and save us further embarrassment in the regard of the world. An apology to the nation by the DSS and the judiciary would also not be out of place. It would go some distance in redeeming the image of an increasingly fascistic agency and reduce the swelling tide of public disillusionment,” he said.

Nigeria is already an embarrassment to the international community. There's no remedy for that.

Every Nigerian with good conscience must demand for the immediate release of Sowore. There is no justification whatsoever for his continued detention. DSS should save face by releasing him immediately. The international embarrassment this case is causing us is unnecessary.

They are acting according to instructions.

Full tyranny.

Expect more.

I remember what my FIL told me when he heard Buhari may win election 2015( he of course know Buhari one on one and majority of those who hang around him now)

He said there is nothing Buhari want than to become the modern usman dan fodio where the rest of us bow down and worship him.
I guess he is right after all.

Call out the people/office directly responsible for this continued madness and the person that appointed the heads of such offices! This lacklustre statement doesn't cut it if you are as objective as you like to lay claim to. You were not this nice when you had issues with the former PDP/GEJ government.

Oh it seems you're just waking up right? Does Buhari looks like a humanity with conscience to you that you're calling on reasonable humanity with conscience?

Same DSS have been acting with utter impunity right from day one while you lots hailed on? They broke into revered judges houses @ midnight in a clear case of vindictive corruption fight even when most of them were eventually cleared by the courts. You guys hailed on.

Then, the DSS shifted attention to the NASS manifesting the worst form of democratic impunity & brigandage by desecrating it even assaulting its principal officers. You all also hailed on.

Now, they are gagging imaginary opposition's and the common man, then you suddenly wake up and remember there is need for mass unrest against tyranny?

Why not call out Mr.President that is the C-in-C the DSS directly reports to? Hypocrisy will not allow you shey? Karma is a bitch.

Every Nigerian must demand? The few that have demanded have you not seen the pictures and videos of them being threatened and attacked by gun-wielding DSS officials? Is it not the same demand for good governance that landed Sowore in this mess now? Or will you separate good governance from respect for the rule of law including valid court orders?

Be bold enough to criticise Buhari that appointed the head of that office. They are the persons that are directly responsible for this wave of lawlessness that has been the hallmark if this administration. Stop these gentle posts, this was not how you were when PDP/GEJ were in office.

These APC supporters lurking around and dotting various threads with how they find the continuous incarceration of Sowore by the government they support, unacceptable, are not yet serious. Is that the only unacceptable thing they can talk about just to claim objectivity? Is it because this one is blatant and there is no way to explain it away or justify it?
I'm sure if an Igbo man was Head of DSS and this was happening, they would have been screaming out his name without compunction. I am surprised they have not gone to dig up one lie to claim that Jonathan did the same thing just to protect their master Buhari. See them, passingshot and seunmsg, all scared to call Buhari by name but if it was GEJ we would have been hearing Otuoke drunk, clueless, and many other rubbish crap they coined just because of hatred for the old Eastern region. Hypocrites everywhere!

Prof Soyinka addresses the wrong guys.

The DSS won't hold Sowore in direct violation of a court order which has granted his release if they were not informed by "their oga at the top" to ignore the court order

Soyinka and co should address Buhari and the other musketeers of Aso Rock. They are the ones giving DSS "the liver" to hold on to Sowore.

The Washington Post wrote an article about this calling it a de javu trick Buhari is trying to pull off as he did during his military regime.

Buhari is not a keen upholder of our democracy. If he is, he would let the DSS obey the court order thus performing their own role of implementing the law. Violating the Judiciary just further hammers in the fact that we have no judiciary.

This is what keeps happening when you are rules by bunch of st**id people who only know the language of power and oppeession.

Some people are still bitter with sowore for speaking up against their buffoon of a hero in 2014, just like he did with Abacha, Obasanjo and Yaradua. That's what a true Patriotic Nigerian does. But I hope they won't start crying and playing victim when buhari's tyranny reaches the south east like they always do cos its coming and nobody will be spared.

This is wrong and raises real question about what is said about PMB by his critics. The DSS/SSS operates as a department within the presidency and under the leadership of the National Security Adviser who is under Buhari. There is therefore no way to extricate Buhari from what is going on with Sowore. They should release him immediately if he has met all bail condition. This is now looking ridiculous for Nigeria, PMB and many who think he is a good leader all things taken into account. Not a fan of Sowore's conduct but the courts set bail the man met bail. What is this rubbish about?
