Berlin 1884: Remembering The Conference That Divided Africa by gaetano: 2:49pm On Nov 17, 2019 |
135 years ago today, European leaders sat around a horseshoe-shaped table to set the rules for Africa's colonisation. On the afternoon of Saturday, November 15, 1884, an international conference was opened by the chancellor of the newly-created German Empire at his official residence on Wilhelmstrasse, in Berlin. Sat around a horseshoe-shaped table in a room overlooking the garden with representatives from every European country, apart from Switzerland, as well as those from the United States and the Ottoman Empire. The only clue as to the purpose of the November gathering of white men was hung on the wall - a large map of Africa "drooping down like a question mark" as Nigerian historian, Professor Godfrey Uzoigwe, would comment.https://www.aljazeera.com/amp/indepth/opinion/berlin-1884-remembering-conference-divided-africa-191115110808625.html?__twitter_impression=true 1 Like 1 Share

They are still holding similar conferences till now. Salient issues that bother on Africa, African issues and it's development are always planned and discussed outside Africa. Pmb makes major announcements only when he is in London. Atiku meets political leaders to discuss about Nigeria only in Dubai. All major African Artists are currently in Dubai to celebrate African music festival. African countries just met with Russian govt in Russia to discuss about Africa few weeks back. They have also met with the Chinese and Japanese govts in their countries respectively to also discuss Africa. African leaders over the years have always been a big disappointment. Let Africa's development start from within Africa. |
