Finally! I was able to run a full load test on my setup after over two months of installation.

These are the load again:

1. 32" TV=67W
2. Home theatre=65W
3. Refrigerator=100W
4. Decoder= 18W
5. Fan=20W

Total load: 67+65+100+18+20=270W

Setup: 12V 100AH Lifepo4 battery ~ 1200W
600W 12V Inverter.

OK! Test started at exactly 12:00PM
Battery voltage was 13.1V before putting on the load. Battery voltage dropped to 12.9V as soon as all load came up.

All loads run from 12:00PM to 5:00PM and battery voltage was 12.5V. At exactly 5:00PM I removed the Refrigerator and the Home Theatre, now left with TV Decoder and Fan still running.
The system was run without refrigerator and sound system from 5PM to 8PM when I finally shot down the system at shot down battery voltage was 11.1V.

System worked for a total of 8hours with 5hours of full load and another 3hours of regular load.

At this point, I don't need a pro or a guru to say it is a standard backup before I believe.
It is actually, and indeed a standard backup as was the intention for this thread... grin grin grin

With a good solar setup attached to this, system can go with full load during the day and hold up well with minimal load at sundown till the next sunshine with battery within 50% DOD or less.

An ideal solar setup for this system would be nothing less than a quality 600W solar panels and a good mppt CC of 30A or 40A.

For my solar setup I already have a smart 30A mppt CC on standby...


Fantastic experience sharing! though the 270w won't be constant since the refrigerator compressor will cut off occasionally and the home theater will usually be at its peak at peak volume, but with the 3hrs jara you are indeed close to your full capacity.

Lithium is no longer the future, it's the present.
Meanwhile anyone with at least 300A rated bus bars to connect Lifepo4 cells for sale should kindly ping me.

You can actually design it for less. I have got different lithium battery set-up, some on only solar, only grid, grid + solar. The one I use personally works on solar. If renewable, lithium battery is the way to go, I have been working with it for over 5 years.

Sorry for the long silence, too many engagements and commitments.

Regarding the purpose of this thread which is my system setup. Apart form the setup being successful, it's also very solid and reliable.

Installation date: 6the December last year. Till date the performance is still very outstanding.
Like is said the there's the plan to upgrade the set up to an off grid and see how well it performs on the basis of 24/7 backup.

I finally relocated to a new place and the system is now properly installed with the the house wiring, which means system is now fully engaged.

So far, the load has increased but all loads are still energy efficient.

Current load on system:
32" TV - 57w
Decoder - 18w
Home theatre - 60w
Refrigerator - 100w
1 DC ceiling fan - 18w
1 AC ceiling fan - 20w
1 smart standing fan - 30w
3 led light - 3w
2 led light - 6w
1 energy saver bulb - 13w

Now my load is much and you may wonder how well it sustains on the system? But it's important to note that all this load don't run at the same time and most run in a very short time on the system and with good PHCN supply I have only run out of power for say two to three days within 2months.

The most amazing thing is that, the system is still very fine and the battery power is still the same.

OK! Good news is, the system as been upgraded with a 2 × 260watts solar panel. That's about 520watts in total connected in parallel to my 12v/24v, 30a mppt charge controller.

Upgrade is a week old now but will like to give it time before posting the performance here due to unstable weather condition.

4. Ceiling fan - 20W
5. Refrigerator - 100W

Note: all load don't run simultaneously but prioritised, with refrigerator running once a while for just 2hours Max and home theatre on rear occasions. And back up normally last for 8hrs to 15hrs.

Okay! It's been quite some time now since I set up my system... System was initially grid dependant and did fantastically well in terms of backup and stability.

Now the system is off grid and still going strong... Though raining seasons are always dark days for off grid set up except for set ups with more than enough solar arrays.

Personally, my 520watts solar array is not bad at all for my design, considering that it's a 12V 100A set up and with the battery able to charge in a short time.

Now, the challenges I currently have is the season. With more cloudy days, my solar array is not enough to compensate for it, so I have to still switch to grid in between and sometimes also boost the battery with grid...

Truth be told! My days without power are over with or without grid supply, I still have something to go through the night.

On a sunny day, battery charging and load run complement well with the generated harvest except for days when battery was drained for more than 50% during the night.

Indeed the advantages of going Lifepo4 can not be over emphasised, starting from: 1. DOD and life cycle, 2. Charging rate and discharge rate, 3. Volume and weight...

My set up 12V 100AH Lifepo4 battery can be related to 12V 200AH set up if using a lead acid battery which is better explained below:

Lifepo4 Battery:
12V 100AH = 1200W or 1.2kWh
Which can be discharged up to 80% or 100%(though, discharging to 100% is not advisable)
You'll also need less solar panels to charge a 1.2kWh bank which translate to less cost of solar panels

Lead Acid Battery:
12V 200AH = 2400W or 2.4kWh
Which is highly recommended to discharge at not more than 50%.
But will need more solar panels to charge a 2.4kWh bank which, translate to more cost of solar panels

With high consumption rate, it's always very difficult to stay within the 50% DOD threshold. That's why Lifepo4 should be the preferred choice as it can with stand abuse of up to 100% DOD and still last longer than it's lead acid counterpart.

Trust me, mine has undergo such abuse. Especially the early days of installation during my load test and it's still standing strong. I doubt how many lead acid will survive that within six months.

So far so good! System is over seven months old and battery is still performing very well...

I guess it's time to help someone build a system too... grin grin grin

You will need to provide the wattage of each load and intended run time... Say, how long you want the system to run.

As perceived, am guessing it's for a barbing shop. Please quote me if am right.

@ jmaine congratulations on you 2.4kWh set up...

This is one active and very determined follower who has got his system procurement of a 48V 50AH smart Lifepo4 battery module and a 1.5kw 60a MPPT hybrid solar inverter through me and with the help of a very reliable nairalander, he was able to install a very reliable system.

Seriously, his solar harvest is really mind blowing as he gets a harvest of 900W to 1.1KW on a sunny day from a 3×350W solar panels. That is about 90% to over 100% of harvest from a 1.050KW solar array...

When he first contacted me, he had in mind to go for a 24V 100AH battery set up but I requested he go for a 48V. Now, He's system runs flawlessly off grid with a very impressive back up time with his estimated load.

You can't get it wrong if you can follow the basics of this thread. Trust me, it will work very well too with lead acid batteries but don't forget to go for quality battery and double capacity to maintain the 50% threshold for lead acid.
