The Nigerian Customs Service Controller, Federal Operation Unit (FOU) Zone B, Kaduna, Mustapha Sarkin Kebbi, has disclosed the discovery of over 2000 illegal routes used to smuggle rice and other contraband goods across the Northern zone. He said the customs lacks adequate manpower to cover all illegal routes at the same time, but that they were doing their best to ensure that no foreign rice gets into the country from those illegal routes.

Sarkin Kebbi said the policies of the federal government on rice production must be sustained by completely stopping smugglers from importing foreign rice and other contraband goods into the country.

The controller who spoke at a news briefing to highlight some of the achievements of his zone said the unit was working on the hinterland to be able to stop the smugglers. He explained that the ongoing border exercise has recorded successes since its commencement in August. “These means that the fight continues and by the grace of God, the Nigerian Customs Service and Nigerians will triumph at the end of the day.

We will make sure that smugglers that are trying to ruin our economy and security didn’t succeed,” he said. He listed some of the goods seized by his zone to include 25 vehicles, 703 bags of parboiled foreign rice, 530 jerry cans of vegetable oil, 245 cartons of spaghetti, nine bales of second hand clothing, 40 jerry cans of kerosene, a truck of PMS at the Kebbi border with 30,000 liters and 288 jerry cans of PMS in Katsina, Sokoto, Kebbi and Kwara states.

He said the duty paid value of the intercepted goods was worth N43 million, just as he lamented the porous nature of Nigerian borders particularly in the North west zone of the country. He said the smugglers usually monitor the movement of customs personnel but progress was being made in the fight against smuggling in the country.

Customs knew about all these illegal routes all along. Point is it's easier to block southern states borders but in the North its vast expanse of desert. All of northern Sokoto, kebbi, Katsina, Borno have more than 1000 entrances into Nigeria

@ Mustapha, if you aren't the one allowing the illegal activities, then your boys should be involved.

the Custom is one hell of a corrupt sect . cool

I will never again believe anything that's cming from the government. I am taught that the sun is a star that planets revolve around. Okay, then what is a star?

The government, custom and Mustapha Hadji are Magicians!

Imagine... didn't they know this before closing the borders?! Why couldn't they put control measures in place?! My pain is that the price of rice would be so high this December, only to go down in January cry

Hmmm
When some people said it, many people here called them wailers.. This border closure stuff might just be only serious in the south.

I hate to read about the lopsided and ineptitude behavior of our leaders. Northern borders might be open anyway.

Cases like this makes we loose hope in this farce called "One Nigeria"

I bet you that 2000 routes could be just 10% of the other routes... The number of goods seized could be just 10% of the total goods seized... Nigerians are very cunny by default.

Interesting

It's common knowledge, there are more routes of entry from Nigerian border.

There are trailers which contain goods(rice) on express roads from North.

It is evident border closure did not affect some goods and some locations.

southern borders are also porous, especially in Oyo and Ogun .. before colonialist drew an imaginary map with french and britain claiming boundaries most of this areas had joint leadership and comuinities, they inter marry and dont know anything about any imaginary border or map

2000? ...there are more than 100,000 roads in the north alone

The whole Niger delta is free ...use boats buy the rice to villages in cross river , akwa ibom , ondo ,bayelsa rivers

...someone should check Cameroon rice import for the last 2 months ...

This policy is a failure it can't work ....until we solve why people demand imported rice there won't be difference
