And yam is very very expensive here in nigeria

Compare to which other countries exactly if I may ask? because before you said this it simply means there are other countries you know that sells cheaper than Nigeria.

World producer of yam? FAO has started going blind. A mid size yam goes for N300-N500.

Anyway we will soon carry first on rice production.

#AllNaAudio
such a dumb comment ..how does price relate to being the largest producer?

The Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO), has ranked Nigeria as one of the World’s largest producers of Yam with about 60 per cent of the Global production of the product, the Permanent Secretary Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development Dr Mohammed Bello has said.

Dr Bello, disclosed this in Abuja at the National Awareness Workshop on Yam, organized by the Advocacy and Resource Mobilization Team (ARMT) of Yam Improvement for Income and Food Security in West Africa (YIIFSWA), an initiative of the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA).

The Permanent Secretary who was represented by the Director of Agriculture in the Ministry, Engr Frank Satumari Kudla, noted that though Nigeria produces about 64 per cent of Yam in the world, it is not among the Comity of Yam Exporting Nations owing to lack of quality seeds of improved varieties and efficient seed production.

He said that (IITA) under it’s (YIIFSWA) programme saw the need to develop High Ratio multiplication technologies such as seed multiplication system that is sustainable and capable of producing high-quality yam seeds at an affordable price to Farmers with high yielding potentials.

We are the largest producer of yam simply because we were not stupid enough to start importing yam.

If we put the same energy into banning importation of rice completely, then we will be self sufficient as well.

Please where is the law banning the importation of yam completely

There is nothing definitely showing that FAO said so. It was another official of lie lie barawo bubu's government who said so.

I did not do comparative analysis with other countries, I only did price analysis index against supply/availability.

We are the largest because we have the comparative advantage over other countries

But for rice m wheat we are disadvantaged

It would be economical wish if we put the energy in rice to cassava ..export the excess use it to buy rice n wheat

Well most buhari present supporters are socialist

Nigeria has better comparative for rice than Thailand and Malaysia. We can grow rice 3 times a year. We have more arable land than China even though China is a much bigger country. Cost of labour in Nigeria is now one of the lowest in the world. Nigeria's problem is mechanization, seeds and modification or finishing of existing irrigation projects.
Most people saying we dont have comparative advantage are being thoughtless and shallow. Think, get a sheet of paper and actually do the maths. If the problem is indiscipline and corruption then its not a comparative advantage issue.
We have comparative advantage in petroleum products as well but because of corruption, laziness and slackness it actually appears we don't have.

People should get serious, get to work and stop criticizing a good policy because they dont like Buhari

Why is this news?! shocked
Nigeria has ALWAYS been the world's leading producer of yams and cassava!

Meanwhile, Nigerian yams have been exported FROM GHANA for years...
Because Nigerian regulatory authorities have been lax in meeting international standards.

But it is NOT a "comparative advantage" when the value chain from farm to table is WOEFUL...
Some of which you've already noted - seedings (and thus yield per acre), input (fertilizers, etc.), irrigation, storage, logistics, transportation, etc.

Somebody help!
Is it only me this thing is confusing?
Is production volume not judged by how much a country exports?

Africa is disadvantaged in rice farming

Yet, rice farmed in Nigeria is cheaper than imported? I mean long grain well cleaned stoneless rice. If we can produce anything cheaper than we can import it, we are not at disadvantage in producing that thing!

They are cheap to begin with because their country subsidize production of rice! Look, if you remove duty, Nigerian rice is CHEAPER than foreign rice! Especially in the North! I have been buying local rice since I schooled in Maiduguri. That was in the 90s. Cheaper than foreign rice. Yes, you may fine one or two stones in a mudu. You may also not find ant stone! Compare the price of local rice to smuggled rice before the border was closed and you will know which is cheaper

Teach me! I am willing to learn! We both agree Nigeria have no business farming wheat. However, we have been farming rice for a long time! Problem is our rice are short grain and not well processed. We believe the long grain rice is better and go for it, not because it is cheaper, but we perceives it to be better!
Now, we are farming long grain rice, processing it well, no more stones. Our local rice are cheaper than smuggled foreign rice! You don't believe? Lake rice was selling for 14k without any subsidy when smuggled foreign rice were selling for higher!
Don't just claim we should not be farm rice, bring evidence to support your claim. U am willing to learn
Re: Nigeria Is World’s Largest Producer Of Yam In FAO Ranking ― FG by NosoChic: 11:11am On Nov 29, 2019
What relevance is this?

Can we have other processed versions of yam like Frozen yam chips or frozen roasted yam. Same thing the west has done with potatoes... that's the phase we should be talking about now.
