The 1st of December is upon us once more and those who know will remember that it is the day set for the commemoration of HIV and AIDS. On this day we pay special attention to this disease which has cost us so much trouble, we remember how it came up suddenly, living us no room to prepare and protect ourselves, we remember those we've lost to the dreadful disease.
It has not been easy but with strength and resilience the human race has fought this virus. And though the fight is far from over, we have made a lot of progress and we can say for sure that humans are winning the fight against HIV and AIDS.
Some of the progress made are;
Effective drug trug therapy; with new improved combined drug therapy, people living with HIV and AIDS can have improved health and suppressed viral load within 3 to 6 months of active drug therapy.
Reduction in death related to AIDS; the number of deaths related to AIDS had reduced to less than half of what it used to be at the peak of the disease in 2004 and 2005.
Reduction in the number of new infections
It is because of the progress; we have faith that HIV and AIDS can and will be eradicated (just like Polio).

But, there is work to be done.
In order to eradicate HIV and AIDS we must all of us be committed to the fight against HIV and AIDS. The fight isn't only for carriers of the disease or relatives and friends of people living with HIV and AIDS nor is it only for health workers. This fight is for all of us, because in a world where HIV and AIDS exist we are all at risk of being infected. Our future generation will be at risk of the disease if we do not combat the menace of HIV and AIDS now.
So, what can you do? We can help eradicate HIV and AIDS by doing the following things;
Create awareness; talk about the disease with friends, with peers and family. Make it a public discussion; talk about its transmission, prevention and care. HIV and AIDS is not an abomination neither is it a death sentence so lets be open about it.
Protect yourself and loved ones; practice and encourage safe sex (use protection), be faithful to your partner(s).
Take your medication; this is essential for people living with HIV and AIDS. It has been scientifically and otherwise proven that an undetectable viral load equals untransmittable infection. So taking medication faithfully to suppress viral load should be the goal of all persons living with the disease.
And finally, the most important thing we can do is to not discriminate or stigmatize people living with HIV and AIDS. Show them love, care and support.
Join the fight against HIV and AIDS today. Let us eradicate HIV and AIDS.
In no time, the 1st of December will be a day to celebrate the exit of this dreaded disease and the world in our imaginations; free of HIV and AIDS will become realit
