They wont open borders till they have killed all Igbo biz.

The borders in the North are open.

while the ones the south are under lock & key while they burn our markets

So it's only the igbo that do business in South and there is no business men in the north that that avail the porous northern border?
Well if your opinion will remedy your hatred and misery am fine with it.

It's not a good development. We cant close our borders and task neighboring countries to fight smuggling. Our problem is institutional. There is corrupt in our customs, these officials are enabling the smuggling and making huge money from it. Fix the organization and you've fixed the problem. Rice is not the only commodity affected, every business must not suffer because of only rice.

This is what we get when we allow illiterates run the economy.

Your father who is not an illiterate, go and bring him to run the country nah. Customs and Immigration are corrupt, is it not saboteurs like you that are working there? Ewu Congo. Borders remain closed. No more smuggling by you and your brethren, if you don't find a legal job, hunger will show you pepper.

I do not understand why people like to make categoricall and absolute statements
Life is quite complex .
FIX THE ORGANIZATION you say ? Is it that easy?? If it was the US , the EU and all these countries with so called strong institutions would not have a drug problem or a human trafficking problem

You are right when you say there are institutional problems etc. I agree. However there are problems on the other side of the border too not just Nigeria

There is no where on earth where there are perfect institutions
The US is more developed than we ate with very strong institutions and plenty of resources yet billions of dollars of cocaine cross its borders every month. That is human beings for you. Now they are talking of a wall.
We do not have America's institutions and we cannot at this time because strong institutions are rare in poor countries which is what we are. That is not going to change overnight.
The border closure is a crude solution and clearly not sustainable but what I disagree with is this armchair postulation as if there is a Magic wand that produces strong institutions overnight. Whether it is Mexico, Bangladesh,India Egypt,Pakistan etc. Where there is poverty there will be weak institutions
In this case the same problems exist in Niger and Benin . Their institutions are no stronger and there are specific steps that Benin must take
Even if our institutions are strong our borders are hundreds of kilometres long and cannot be policed perfectly

Specifically we need to move to a regime where ALL GOODS that move across our borders are containerized in SEALED CONTAINERS

Nigeria is being drawn back by Bubu's lamentable understanding of economics.

Simply producing everything does not make a country prosperous. If it did, the Soviet Union would have been the richest place on earth as it was over-industrialized! However, it was economic ruin that compelled Gorbachev to start dismantling the system.

Simply making things you can import is a very poor way of allocating capital. You'll mostly grow weeds and not wheat. Target making items you excel at is the best way of allocating capital. And the best way of shifting the wheat from the weed is through low import duties or none at all.

In such a market, only products you excel in can thrive. Those you suck at will perish.

Being self sufficient in food production simply means Nigerians should get ready to start paying more for food. The prime reason why Nigeria imports many types of food is because of the it lacks comparative advantage in them. It's simply cheaper importing than making them ourselves, rice in particular.

If you accuse them of insincerity and selfishness, you might be right. But illiteracy, is completely wrong.

The Benin case is not one of "smuggling" This is a state orchestrated and financed revenue drive with Nigeria as victim. Forget the idea of some poor smugglers this is a huge internationally coordinated exercise involving Thailand, Vietnam and Benin Republic. There are massive bonded warehouses on the benin side which under an MOU from OBJ time, Nigerian customs are supposed to pre check goods but this was stopped by the Beninoise. I am not ruling our corruption by Nigerian customs - we know what they are like. But a blanket ban hits them as well. Those people using okada to smuggle through bush paths are a very limited number that cannot alter the dynamics of the market which is buy expensive imported rice, source for local rice that has not been rebagged into foreign bags or go without -eating rice is not a human right! When I was growing up and in my era rice was only eaten at parties or on sundays. I guess that tells you my age wink

Oh and goods are still coming in by sea and even by air. Tonnage at ports has risen showing that many land importers are switching.

We do not need to produce everything but those things which are imported must pay the right tariffs. That would boost government revenue and encourage production of those things where we have a comparative advantage
Also if items are to be imported to Nigeria from anywhere they should enter Nigeria DIRECTLY not through Benin
Nigeria is a member of the World Trade Organization and so cannot ban rice.

Your remarks are quite naive . You need to inform yourself about the politic of agricultural subsidies. The world agricultural market is not a free market

THe US, The EU and China subsidize their agriculture MASSIVELY

The US e.g gives over $20 billion a year on agricultural subsidies and is one of the largest food exporters in the world

Subsidies distort the market and to spout textbook theories about comparative advantage without facing reality is quite amusing.

Comparative advantage has demonstrably been developed OVER TIME using a mixture of protectionist instruments by many countries.
Trade is VERY political and it is foolish to pretend otherwise

Let me try to show you a different perspective in addition to what you’ve said which is also mostly correct.

A country such as Benin is actually working to directly sabotage our economy. They are currently one of the top 10 importers of rice in the world. And this was by design through active steps taken by their government to promote importers into Nigeria through their ports. At the time the Nigerian goverment was raising imports on rice to 35%, they were decreasing theirs to 5% and promoting incentives.

Besides fixing the corrupt customs, the Nigerian government must show its strong hand in being able to deal with economic saboteurs around it and this is what they are trying to do.

How is closing border related to Boko Haram attacks?
let's stop being petty.
I agree it has reduced the attacks from BH but the wider picture is, our local manufacturers are gearing up and are ramping up production gradually.
it was never going to be like waving a magic wand.

it's a gradual thing

Though you made one or two valid points but your ending statement showed what your intent was and how myopic some of you can be.

Whether some of you like it or not, I think this border closure should remain in place as long as it helps our local industry to thrive.
Enough of this nonsense some of you peddle to shut us up.
