These pictures were posted by Tunde Ogundeji of Compass Newspaper, a local daily paper in Nigeria, showing the risk the masses face everyday from those whose duties are to provide security.

The policemen from the elite unit of ‘Mobile Police Force’ threw caution and their training to the wind as they engaged in a fight that had motorists, hawkers and on-lookers scampering to safety.

While the fight lasted, the three corporals with their loaded AK 47 put the lives of other road users in danger.

According to the report, people were seen scampering for safety, and nobody could tell what caused the fight, which got so messy that the policemen wrestled and dragged themselves on the ground. The fight caused a heavy traffic build up that lasted for hours on both sides of the road.

The Compass also informed that some motorists and hawkers, who could have intervened, were afraid of the guns they were wielding while the fight was going on.

“We just saw them fighting. Some of us tried to move in to know the cause of the fight but because of the way they were holding their guns while still fighting, we were afraid of a case of accidental discharge. It would have been better if they had handled the matter more maturely than to engage in a street fight."

However, some people said the fight might have been caused by a disagreement over how to share the daily illegal toll, police collect from commercial transporters as bribes on the road. The N20, N50 and N100 (which is less than a dollar) has resulted in deaths in the past which police always classify as “accidental deaths” from gun touting police when motorists refuse to pay these money.

The Nigerian Police reaction to this show of shame is still being awaited.
