Ekiti State University, Ado-Ekiti, on Thursday said it has sacked over 600 members of staff over alleged irregular employment, overage and sundry other allegations.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Edward Olanipekun, said the decision of the university council followed adoption on Thursday of the audit report carried out by a group of external auditors.

Olanipekun, who addressed journalists on resolution of the council meeting in Ado-Ekiti, said the sacking would save about N200m for the university monthly.

He said that the general staff audit “was sequel to the findings in the Report of the Visitation Panel as accepted by the Government White Paper to the university, which noted, among other things, that there were over-staffing, redundancy and personnel misalignment in virtually all the sections of the university and which astronomically increased the wage bill beyond its capacity to pay.”

Olanipekun, who did not give the exact number of affected workers, said, “228 members of staff could not produce or show evidence of Primary School Leaving Certificate.

“There were some ghost workers whose names were found on the university payroll without being on the university nominal role.

“Some members of staff presented falsified birth and educational certificates.

“Some of the members of staff lacked the required basic educational qualification.

“Some members of staff were illegally retained in the university services after having been due to retire. “There are other cases of over aged staff.

“The decision to disengage the affected workers was after due consideration of the issues involved and in the overall best interest of the university to be properly positioned for local relevance and global competitiveness.”

Now multiply 200million Naira by the number of Federal & State Varsities in Nigeria.

You will be shocked that the money will be enough to equip our Laboratories to Modern Standard.

Corruption reigns in every facets of the Country, not in the Government alone.

Is this the way to move forward as nation?
When fraud, deception and lies have been ingrained into the heart of an average Nigerian.
And definitely this is not only going on in Ekiti State, but in almost every state in Nigeria.

There was a nation!

From what I read, those who were sacked were not supposed to be employed or to remain in employment. So the massive sack was purely to correct anomalies in the system.

Some people were employed with forged, fake or missing First School Leaving Certificates, Birth Certificates and University Certificates. They were therefore sacked. Others were already due for retirement but fraudulently retained. They were also sacked.

A government that is supposed to create employment is creating unemployment, instead of sacking them y not find a way of absolving them in to work since d only problem is that they were employed illegally not that they ar not qualified. Now they ar unemployed d govt should expect increase in crime rate, since of them will engage in crime to atleast feed themselves nd family. Ekiti was better under Fayose
