The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has described the Accountant General of the Federation, Mr. Ahmed Idris, as a frustrated ‘account clerk’.

This is coming as ASUU members have refused to enrol into the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS).

ASUU condemned the Accountant General of the Federation for threatening to sanction Vice Chancellors who have refused to enrol into what it called ’fraud platform’.

OgeneAfrican learnt that AGF, Mr. Ahmed Idris had in a letter dated 2nd December, 2019, advised some Vice Chancellors who are yet to enrol on the IPPIS to do so on or before 6th December failure of which will attract appropriate sanctions.

But, ASUU Chairman at the University of Ibadan, Professor Deji Omole while reacting, stated that it was unfortunate that Vice Chancellors had become errand boys that will now be threatened by an ‘account clerk’.

According to Omole, the threat against VCs was an indication of the massive failure being recorded by the government with lecturers not enrolling into the system.

Omole in a statement on Wednesday in Ibadan, the Oyo state capital, stated that it was unfortunate that the likes of Ahmed Idris whose office have continued to extort public University Bursars via unlawful kickbacks, was the one claiming he wants to use IPPIS to ensure transparency and accountability.

Omole, who hailed some Vice Chancellors for refusing to be enslaved, added that it was woe to a nation where intellectuals become errand boys to those who cannot pass ICAN exam.

He said, “It is a very sad development for any nation having the likes of Idris as the chief accountant of the nation.

“It takes someone with scholarship to appreciate scholars.”

Omole maintained that the union had made useful suggestions to the federal government, but stated that Nigerian intellectuals would not be turned to errand boys of corrupt civil servants.

So he couldn't pass ICAN? No wonder the country is in such a mess. Unqualified people are given huge positions to handle.

If it is true that the accountant general of the federation is not a chartered accountant, that will be nepotism carried to a ridiculous foolish level.

Those who are foolishly supporting the obvious incompetence of this administration should remember that PMB has only three years more to be President. I wondered how history will judge people like Sagay, Keyamo, Lauretta and Osibanjo when PMB finally conclude his tenor?
PMB is fast becoming a dictator and there may be sanction in the future for officials that support his lack of regards for the rule of law.

We should reason and comment beyond petty sentiment .it is a shame to fail ICAN for the cannibal of AGF but this is not the time to debate on that the issues on ground is why ,what and where are ASSU hiding that make it difficult for them to register under IPPIS which other government agencies had done without making too much trouble like ASSU is doing presently They should obey the regulation of mother regency not to come on Media to attack the person of individual who doesn't have power to stop government agencies not to carry out its job functionalities. Tell us why is not good or the negativity aspect of you registering under IPPIS So Nigerians can justify what and where you belong to with IPPIS .Bcs it is very easy for your enemies to pretend as your friends not until they are exposed .

The system is questionable and flawed, it will not work with ASUU...ASUU can't easily be integrated on that platform due to some factors identified and pointed out.

We both know ASUU are scared of being exposed.
Instead of tabling out those factors as terms of being enrolled, they are blatantly rejecting it..

Scared of being exposed over what? I'm not saying some people don't work two jobs, but they are not full time jobs and it's done in other countries too, not only in Nigeria. Not excusing some corrupt academics, but I assure you this is not the solution.

ANAN was purposely established by the north to accommodate those who couldnt pass ICAN exams just like NECO which was founded to rival WAEC.

Technical and integrity issues that have been tabled before the panel. They are trying to paint ASUU black here and it will not work.

If ASUU joins, our educational sector will be totally destroyed. For instance, look at TSA, which has been used to mop up every penny from the University system. Universities have been grossly underfunded under this regime because they only release money they feel is needed. Lecture Halls are not maintained, research grants are no longer available, teaching materials are hardly available and much more rot now in the system. This government is trying to suppress ASUU, that's all.

No they are not registered but College of education lecturer, Poly lecturer, Military, Drs, police are all already enrolled into IPPIS long ago. The saner question is, why is ASUU afraid of enrolling into IPPIS?

Kakistocracy

Nigeria currently is being ran by the least qualified set of people.

Nigeria is at it's lowest.

But Buharideens will swear by anything that Nigeria is at it's best under Buhari.

I pray Nigeria gets into the hand of the likes of Fashola so the mumus can experience real meaning of 21st century governance.

ASUU has autonomy pact with the government. The question is why is the government trying to break its pact with ASUU?

The autonomy should also include ASUU paying their own salary, intervention fund and research intervention should all be taken care by ASUU until then, ASUU claimed of autonomous remains inconsequential.

thanks for your mature enlightenment on this issue .if I can understand you The government big thief is trying to remove some hiding yams from the ASSU parasite thieves while both of them may not fighting for the well being of Nigerians bcs since when I know ASSU they only fight for their personal benefits not for Nigerian .they always complaining even when the yam was in their mouth .they can't do any favour for students than to extort them to the last kobo yet THE NIGERIA EDUCATION IS STILL FAR BACK BEHIND COMPARE TO OTHER AFRICAN COUNTRIES.pls let the government do what they want to do bcs I can't see a big tangible maintenance the ASSU is doing in Nigeria Universities than to pocket the whole things .In Nigeria Universities you see centuries wall painting that was been there since Awolowo Regime .me I tire of people call Nigerians not Nigeria.

Ok fine, he is an account clerk. Why not enrol under the IPPS? With all your certificate, and ICAN, the account clerk is absolutely right and obviously smarter than you are!

Ouch! That was below the belt and totally uncalled for. Also not relevant since he is still a member of the only other official accounting body with a legal charter in Nigeria.

Plus it's a diversionary ad hominem attack that still has nothing to do with lecturers enrolling for IPPIS. ASUU should just focus on the argument instead of descending to personal attacks.

It does imply however, that no accounting body in Nigeria will ever be likely to possess the same highly acclaimed status as ICAN.
