Good development but it will not solve anything under Buhari govt but he is the all in all. This best thing is to take away the power to appoint the CJN/AGF from the president.
The President doesn't appoint the CJN, the NJC does. Most times in a hierarchical manner.

The President only sends to the Senate and assents.

This AGF move is a good one.

looking at the high cost of running government in Nigeria, I will say the move may not be helpful to the general public because every office in Nigeria government is politically motivated.
Creating another office will definitely come with another salary and endless allowance for both (the Anthony general and the Minister of Justice) which will increase the already existing cost of running the government.
Another way of wasting tax payer money.
they should pass a bill that reduce the cost of running government in Nigeria.

The president should not have powers to select the attorney general and minister of justice...he should be fielded by an autonomous team of the NBA chiefs... allowing a president select these state representatives of justice is not reasonable, if we expect true justice.

Uncle the roles are different and it can lead to conflict of interest if held by the same person.
Ok.... one oversees the ministry of justice, the other one prosecuted cases for the federal government... which should be tied to the ministry of Justice. To me both roles are interchangeable.

For what? Maybe we should just call it simply Minister of justice or Attorney General. No need creating another office abeg.

So where will the agfs office reside, under or above NJC ? Is he an executive or judicial member ?
The minister will head the ministry and reps the executive,
The solicitor gen is the perm sec, under the minister,

On point.

And even that of the INEC chairman should also be taken from him

Without that we are merely joking.

General Mohamodu Buhari (rtd) would never sign this into law, This one na waste of time

An independent office of the Arntorney General which isnt under the President's control means what is hapening in the US to Trump can happen to Gen Buhari and we know no Nigerian President would ever allow that

.

Do they need his consent to make the bill law?

Must there be a Minister of Justice?
Attorney General of the Federation is enough.

In a saner and developed nation, the Attorney general is the head of ministry of Justice, but in a local nation like Nigeria the story is always different. The show of shame continues.

sunkoye:

It’s an UNNECESSARY AND WASTEFUL Bill...

The AGF is the ONLY cabinet position created by the constitution, and it has the specific role of the nation’s (not the federal government nor the administration’s) Chief Law Officer. The AGF uses the institutional vehicle of the Justice Ministry (of which the AGF heads) to carry out his constitutional responsibilities. Accordingly, the position of “minister of justice” (signifying political leadership of the Justice Ministry) is superfluous and unnecessary. Even the US, from where we copied-and-pasted much of our Constitution, has BOTH roles subsumed in the AG.

The REAL problem is that the current AGF (as well as several of his predecessors) do not seem to quite understand the constitutional role of the office that he holds and thus apparently thinks (and often acts) as the executive branch’s lawyer. Blame the artisan, not the tools.

No, the President appoints the CJN...
Albeit, technically, it’s just a nomination until Senate approval.

The NJC recommends 3 names to the President...
But it is the President’s prerogative to decide therefrom.
