There are a lot of secrecy in this government that you doubt anything good they do isn't without corruption

There is a lot of secrecy in all government in every country.

Is it dat there was no cost-benefit analysis when the rails were being built?
Even ordinary people who build houses for rent do the cost analysis.
It seems as if the whole idea of the rails then was just a political gimmick and not a well thought out economic plan
Of course there wasn't! This is Nigeria we're talking about, and Nigeria under Buhari to boot, where moribund white elephants like Ajaokuta and Nigeria Airways are publicly proclaimed as worthy of reawakening, where decrepit refineries are budgeted hundreds of millions of USD for yet more fruitless "turn around maintenance", where "fighting corruption" is bundled with an exchange-rate scheme that encourages round-tripping, where imports are arbitrarily banned and borders are arbitrarily closed, stimulating an explosion in smuggling, where absolutely nothing is privatized by a government going on a foreign borrowing spree ... Rank economic illiteracy is the order of the day and for the foreseeable future.

Seriously unrealistic analysis. Most of these types of projects around the world are not profitable. They are mostly subsidized bu the govt, the London train systems, the Marta train systems in Atlanta are not profitable and they have been in existence for years.
Regarding cost overruns, this is also very normal. I remember the Los Angeles's underground system has been under construction for decades and the cost has gone through the roof.

Mistakes are bound to be made.in such huge projects and it's ok to point them out but to expect the system to start making profit anytime soon is day dreaming.
The best they can do is too make as much as possible from their operations and allow the govt to subsidize the rest.
If you think Emirates and Dubai train are profitable operations then you are living in lala land. Emirates is heavily subsidized by the UAE govt, that's why Delta stopped flying to Dubai because they can't compete.

Nigerians needs to have a mindset of paying way more taxes to subsidize these kinds of facilities if they truly want to live like those in the western world.

Great analysis, however u finished it wrongly.
It's not about paying more in tax if corruption is embedded in our system. As it stands even if Nigerians pay 100% if their salaries as taxes nothing will change! One man somewhere will just keep getting richer!

grin The issue with Nigeria railway is that:
1.They are in tree network instead of branched.
2. Apart from the economically motivated ones built by colonial masters, few rail lines have been added.
3. Most are up north with little economic importance -Lagos to Ibadan-Onitsha-Aba would have made sense.
4. Most constructed are politically/ethnically motivated
5. Old coaches- who still uses locomotives when we have maglev, diesel, nuclear (we can leave nuclear for now because of, you know...) etc?
6. Single guage lines, instead of multiple - leading to various destinations.

Not only that, they can earn advertising revenue from their terminals and also concession part of those terminals for shops and restaurants and retail outlets.

There is also a lot of fraud and waste in the NRC. At some terminals (e.g. in Iddo terminus), you will never find a POS terminal that can be used to buy rail tickets.

They have different cashiers collecting cash. How much of that cash, is actually properly accounted for?

On the Abuja-Kaduna rail line, the NRC officials collude to hoard tickets, and later turn round to sell it an exorbitant rate.

Yet, they will say the NRC is not making money. Get rid of the fraud and plug the waste!

If we don't begin to like this country, we will keep fooling ourselves.

How can the train management not know how much it generates every month?

Now, they are not paying back the loan borrowed to construct the track and procure the train. Instead, the government is adding more money to take care of overheads.

Nigeria appears to me like a country that is destined to fail no matter who the leader is.

They know. They are also aware of the corruption within the system. Let them address that one, first!! shocked

Summary pls

To summarize:

Nigeria will soon be a Chinese Colony because they cannot break-even talkless of start paying off the loan.

2. They are running an unsustainable model where overhead is greater than ticket revenue - subsidy

3. They want to take more loan but a condition to access this is that they start repaying the initial loan which they may struggle to do due to point 2

How? It is not running at full capacity yet, only about 4 journeys in 24hours- probably 3-4 coach each instead of 7 or 8

Trust me, people like these are paid by government in order to brainwash the masses into believing those lies concerning taxation.
If you must tax the common man, corruption must be fought, because some men become barons ( like England in the dark ages), feasting like vultures on the sweat of you and me.

I won't pay any tax if I perceive that it will be eventually chopped by someone.

Pay way more taxes.... so that our National Assembly members can continue paying themselves huge salaries, and Buhari can continue spending several weeks abroad for medical treatment, at our expense right?
