House begins voting on the first of two articles of impeachment against Trump. The first vote, scheduled to last 15 minutes, is on abuse of power. Once that concludes, the House will hold a five-minute vote on obstruction of Congress.

As voting continued, supporters of impeachment crossed the 216-vote threshold needed to secure a majority in the House.

The House also voted to impeach Trump for Obstruction of Congress.

The 229 to 198 vote fell almost entirely along party lines. All of Trump's fellow Republicans opposed it, and all but three Democrats supported it.

The 435-member House is currently voting on the second article of impeachment facing Trump — for obstructing the congressional probe into his attempt to have Ukraine investigate his potential 2020 Democratic presidential opponent Joe Biden.

The votes also set the stage for a likely trial in the Republican-led Senate in January. No president has ever been removed from office via the impeachment process set out in the Constitution, and Republican senators have given little indication of changing that.
