The operation that led to the killing of Soleimani was entirely planned by the US military, after a go-ahead by the US President Donald Trump.

If you checked the microblogging site, Twitter this morning, you would have seen World War 3 trending.

Well, the escalating tension between the United States and Iran as a result of the killing of Iran’s most powerful military commander, General Qasem Soleimani, led to the insinuation that a World War III is almost inevitable.

Here are five things you need to know about the killing of the top commander:

1. Donald Trump Ordered the Air Strike That Killed the Commander: So, the operation that led to the killing of Soleimani was entirely planned by the US military, after a go-ahead by the US President Donald Trump. He was killed at Baghdad airport, alongside local Iran-backed militias, early on Friday.

2. Soleimani Was Specifically Targeted: As the saying goes, kill the shepherd and the sheep will scatter. That was what the US aimed to achieve with the killing of Soleimani. Soleimani was said to be the architect of most of the crisis rocking the Middle East.

According to the BBC, the 62-year old spearheaded Iranian military operations in the Middle East as head of Iran's elite Quds Force.

3. Iran Is Planning A Major Retaliation: Iran is not taking the attack lying low. The Iranian authorities said they are determined to exact revenge on the killing of the officer.

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said: "severe revenge awaits the criminals" behind the attack while announcing three days of national mourning.

Mohsen Rezaei, the former commander of the Revolutionary Guards, said Iran would take "vigorous revenge on America". A spokesman for the Iranian government said the country's top security body would meeting in a few hours to discuss the "criminal act of attack", reports the BBC.

4. The US Is Celebrating the Killing: The US has called the commander and the Quds Force terrorists and holds them responsible for the deaths of hundreds of US personnel. President Trump tweeted an image of the American flag shortly after the news broke. Surprisingly, global oil prices rose more than 4 per cent in the wake of the strike.
