video of the Oba of Benin, Ewuare II, dancing the popular ‘Shaku Shaku’ dance has surfaced online
The traditional ruler was filmed dancing ‘Shaku Shaku’ at a children’s New Year party which held at his palace in Benin.
The annual event, which holds at the Oba’s palace, is an initiative of the monarch.
Other highlights at the well-attended event were dance competitions and talent hunt interludes.
But the monarch’s two-minute unexpected dance moves were clearly the highpoint of the day
In the video, he was led to the dance floor by some of his aides just as he had begun dancing to Skales ‘Shake Body’ track playing in the background.
And before the audience could catch their breath, he broke into ‘Shaku Shaku’ dance and that sent the crowd wild.
Clad in his traditional white apparel and signature black shades, the monarch did the ‘Shaku Shaku’ ‘legwork’ seamlessly.
About Shaku Shaku Dance
‘Shaku Shaku’ dance found its way into Nigerian (street) pop culture in 2017 -all thanks to ‘Agege boys’, Mr. Real, Slimcase and Obadice.
The trio claim that Shaku Shaku has its origins on the vibrant streets of Agege.
It caught on like wildfire after Dammy Krane released his hit single ‘Shaku Shaku’ in December 2017.
The likes of Lil’ Kesh, Tiwa Savage, and Mayorkun, then took the dance to the next level after they showed it off during their stage performances.
Before now, the only Nigerian celebrity who succeeded in breaking the internet while dancing ‘Shaku Shaku’ was Genevieve Nnaji.
On April 15, 2018, the extremely private actress posted a video of herself dancing Shaku Shaku with Olamide’s ‘Wo

that mentality was in the past.
The current oba spent his life in vgc lagos before he ascend to the throne.
He was at Abuja golf course last year. 21st century monarchs re quite different from their ancestors

The Oba of Benin is the only real Oba because that is his actual title !
The yoruba copied it late in the colonial era.
The same way you can say the alafin of oyo is the only real alafin or the ooni of ife is the only real ooni, although nobody cared to copy their titles.
So the Oba of Benin dances, boo hah hah... grow up. The Oba of Benin made those Edo kids happy. Mission accomplished. The only real Oba taking care of his people.

The problem with most of you nigerians is your lack of education.
You people know nothing about even your very recent history.
The Oba of Benin organizes a celebration for Edo kids in his palace and joins in dancing, and so what ?
If the king of Portugal does it, the whole internet will praise him so much it would make a buzz. If queen elizabeth or her son prince charles do it, everybody will praise them as well.
Nigerians are very weird.
Would you prefer to see kings beating up children rather than this lovely sight ?
Kindness is not a nigerian for sure. How I wish we weren't defeated by the british !
The Benin empire would still be standing, our own country would still be standing, we wouldn't have to be packed with these weird nigerians.

oba is a Yoruba word borrowed by benin. Before first oba of Benin the word have already been existing among yorubas. Their yoruba gods like obaluwaye, obalufon e.t.c
Every monarch in yoruba is oba but the title of their throne is used to address them
Like alafin of Oyo, Oni of ife, Soun of Ogbomosho, awujale of ijebu e.t.c
Oba in yoruba

O-he
BA- reigns

meaning he reigns over the land.

The benin word for king is ogie/ogiso
The name benin is a corruption of yoruba word ile-ibinu. Benin name before coming of oranmiyan is igodomigodo kingdom ruled by the ogisos.

Actually, you are wrong.

1) The first mention of the word Oba in writing was around the 15th century and it referred exclusively to the Oba of Benin.

2) in the precolonial era and in the early colonial era , no Yoruba was referred to as Oba. Instead the likes of the ooni of ife were referred to as " ooni of ife, sir Obasanjo". But late in the colonial era, the Yoruba replaced the English word "sir" with the title of the emperor of Benin "Oba".

You can check precolonial captions of photos of Yoruba chiefs and even early colonial ones.

3) you Yoruba should stop refusing reality.
Benin was copied many times:

1) Bight of Benin
2) Benin Republic
3) the British exposing hundreds of Benin artworks belonging to the Oba
4) the germans exposing hundreds of Benin artworks belonging to the Oba
France doing same, America doing same...

So stop feeling inferior when confronted with the fact you guys copied the word Oba from Benin.

5) the attire of your ooni is half copied from the king of the Ashanti and the rest is from the Oba of Benin.

6) the fact your gods had the name Oba on them could mean your ancestors worshipped the Oba of Benin or the names are revisionist names.

Benin was a great empire ! It is normal that you guys copied it, just like the rest of Europe copied Rome.

7) it is as if you guys don't understand the fact your ooni's title is ooni and the Oba of Benin's title is Oba. All the rest you say is feel good propaganda, lies told over and over. Accept the truth.

Benin city, where The King lives.

I don't hate Yoruba for copying Benin culture, but I hate them for not paying credits and turning around to claim Benin copied them instead.
