A group of angry mobs have on Monday, January 6, 2020 burnt two (2) suspected thieves to death for allegedly robbing a shop in Calabar, Cross River State.

PARADISE NEWS gathered that the incident occurred at about 2:00am in the morning at Jehovah Witness Street, Akai Efa in Calabar Municipality local government area of the state.

According to eyewitnesses, the thieves were four (4) in number, but two of them escaped leaving the two that were burnt; one by the road side while the other inside the drainage (gutter).

One of the eyewitness who gave his name as Dominic told PARADISE NEWS that, "The thieves, four in number were caught while robbing a small shopping centre at Jehovah Witness Street opposite Orange Resort at about 2:00am today (January 6, 2020).

"Two of them ran away while the other two were apprehended by the angry mob. They were set ablaze by the mob. The one closed to the road died almost immediately, while the other in the fire inside the gutter died this morning - he refused to die despite being burnt since around that 2:00am", Dominic said.

Another eyewitness who did not want his name to be mentioned also told PARADISE NEWS that the suspected thieves have been robbing that area for a very long time now including the recent robbing of a betting shop on Saturday, January 4, 2020.

"The incident happened at Akai Effa this morning (6th of January, 2019). The robbers were four in number but two were unlucky as they were caught. Meanwhile it's in the suspicion of the residents that these very guys had previously robbed a phone accessories and repair store, carting away with items such as phone accessories and a generator on Saturday 4th January. The tools used for this were visible at the scene of the crime.

"The guys met their waterloo when they were sighted at a barber's shop where they stole a TV and other items. They also visited a Bet King shop in the same area and carted away with laptops and a TV set as well. While they were apprehended, two escaped and the other two were caught, beaten and burnt to death. They were burnt opposite Orange Resort", the anonymous eyewitness said.

When PARADISE NEWS visited the area, the body of one of the suspected armed robber was still burning until the security operatives came and dispatched both corpses.

When contacted on phone on Monday by PARADISE NEWS, the Police Public Relations Officer in Cross River State, DSP Irene Ugbo didn't take her calls on multiple occasions at the time of filing this report.

Why don't people learn lessons from previous events? They knew the consequences of their actions if they got caught, yet they made up their minds to embark on it. When our desires are stronger than our ability to control ourselves, we plunge into unfortunate situations which we may or may not get out from. I do not support jungle justice, especially this kind, but I must say they got served what they asked for.
