Everyday I board BRT bus from barracks bus stop to TBS and I can authoritatively inform you passengers erage of 65 passengers board scheme sit possesses 42 seats while an extra of over twenty stands on the bus. The problem with the BRT scheme is not low fare but rather the mismanagement of funds by the operator of the scheme. the old BRT bus which is now in private hands still charge comparably lower fees than the new bus e.g from costain to Ikorodu you are charged N200 by the old red but bus while the blue bus charges N250 so it's evident that the management of the scheme are not being sincere.

AutoJoshNG:

Plans are underway to increase BRT fares in Lagos state. Primero Transport Services Limited, the sole operator of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) in Lagos, made the announcement recently. The proposed increase will affect all BRT routes in the state.

According to Fola Tinubu, the Managing Director of the company, the planned increase of fares is to meet up with current realities.

According to him, “the current fares are “grossly inadequate” for the firm to provide better services for Lagosians”.

“Primero is planning to approach the regulator for an increase in fares. The last increase we got was done three years ago and our cost of operations has really increased,” he said.

“The company is not in a good financial standing now to run and foot cost of maintenance and operation of buses.

“We understand the need to provide services to the people; I think the increase has become necessary in order to serve the people of Lagos better”, Tinubu added.

Primero Transport Service Ltd became the sole BRT operator in the State 2016. This happened after the state government disengaged a LAGBUS-operated BRT franchise. The franchise had over 36 franchisees with hundreds of their buses.

Recall that, in May 2016, former governor Akinwunmi Ambode-led administration donated 50 new buses for BRT operations in the state.

In February 2017, the Ambode-led Lagos State government approved the increase of BRT fare. The increment took effect on March 1, 2017. The approved fare increase ranged from 20% to 50%  on different routes plied by the buses.

On August 2019, just like his predecessor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, announced the acquisition of 800 new BRT buses.

According to the Governor, “Beyond road construction, we have started expanding the bus rapid transit system and gradually reducing the danfo buses on the roads. I am excited to announce that we have purchased over 800 buses to add to the existing BRT fleet expanding to more routes”.

“We are supportive of private investment in transportation”.

Since it has become customary for the Government of the State to gift Primero with brand new buses, using tax-payers money, what justifications are there to increase the fares within a short period?

Shouldn’t the regular largess to the company be regarded as a means of subsidizing the fares paid by Lagos state residents?

The last increment in fares was about 3 years ago. Has the cost of fueling the buses or spare parts drastically increased within that period?

Are the excuses offered by Primero for the proposed increase of BRT fares valid?

The last increment wasn't 3 years ago.It hasn't been up to 2 years.
They enjoy monopoly of dedicated lanes and that gives them d leverage to do as they like.
Allow another service to also use d dedicated lanes and see if they would be increasing fares at their whims and caprices.
We claim to b operating a free market economy but are infact operating a monopolistic economy in large areas of our economy.

Do the buses run on air? Or the prices for spare-parts and lubricants have been consistent for the past 4 years?

Re: Proposed BRT Fares Increase: Are The Reasons Valid? by Sagay212: 3:42pm On Jan 10, 2020
The managenent of the BRT is the most useless team ever to manage a business. These useless people run the business anyhow they like because they know they have no reasonable competition. Customer service is extremely poor and the drivers are annoyingly stu.pid. people will queue at the terminals for hours while buses are parked and the useless drivers and ticketers will be gisting and ignore commuters on the queue. They have no sensible supervisor to monitor and discipline them. They have numbers and a Twitter page for complaints but they hardly reply to any complaints on social media.

They do all these because they know they'll make money no matter what. Even with the increment, they won't pay their useless workers well and won't maintain buses. They keep employing lazy idiots who are their family members and friends and at the end of the day, they'll ruin the whole thing. I dare Lagos state to allow just one competitor like the Lag bus and allow them play brt lane and see if the useless BRT wont pack up in 2 months due to extremely poor management.

Everything has been increased in Nigeria because of N30,000 minimum wage. Even at that many states are yet to implement it and not every body is government worker. Please let this regime try to have human face the hardship is unbearable in the country.

The transport fares should even be reduced, why are they increasing it since it's meant for the masses.
Re: Proposed BRT Fares Increase: Are The Reasons Valid? by oriewanbe: 5:42pm On Jan 10, 2020
Discos will increase tariff by April , brt coming too, some private schools have increased fee. prices of local rice has gone up, VAT has increased as well. I don't know which is next maybe it's the pump price of petrol and even the dollars. All these because of the new minimum wage. Govt just want to bring workers back to that formal level they were before the minimum wage increase.
Re: Proposed BRT Fares Increase: Are The Reasons Valid? by KrystosCJ(m): 5:51pm On Jan 10, 2020
Lagos state is rich enough to take care of the maintenance and still charge less fees from passengers who patronize these buses. Instead of cushioning the VAT hike by making it easier for people and goods to move without financial strain, they've decided to announce an increase like PHCN so that they can fill up their pockets to the brim.

Seems the bigger picture is that Fola Tinubu is using his company and his connections in Alausa to support Bola Tinubu's political influence in Lagos. What better way to do that than by "enriching" him, since many political zombies worship people who have the most money to waste (not by their hard-earned labor but by pen-pushing, fraud and milking the masses!)

These are the same miscreants that will travel abroad and see the good things that Caucasians are doing, creating and admire it. But when they come back, they can never replicate what they saw in a sustainable, affordable manner so that we can boast and be proud of our homeland.

With all the bus acquisitions they still have the mind to pack commuters in their buses from Oshodi to Toll Gate(before Sango Otta) like sardines? Also, staff needs retraining, as drivers ain't courteous ( they won't even want to stop for one to get down) and over speed at times.
If they increase it slightly, and bring in some comfort instead of running it like molues, not bad....I pray too that they can go beyond Lagos and actually do INTER-CITY transport within the Western region with the collaboration of the governors in the West, for safety and decency.
