Hanan Buhari and Unprecedented Abuse of Presidential Powers-THREAD

The Presidency said it isn’t a legal violation or even a subversion of convention for Buhari’s daughter to use a publicly funded presidential jet for private purposes. That’s flat-out untrue. But even if it were true, things don’t always have to be illegal for them to be condemnable. Something can be condemnable because it’s unethical or immoral, even if it’s legal. Making a tax-funded presidential jet available for the private use of Buhari’s daughter is straight-up unethical, even borderline illegal.

Of course, it’s entirely defensible, even expected, for Buhari’s family members to get on a presidential jet WITH him. That’s one of the perks of the presidency. But Buhari’s daughter, not being a Vice President, a Senate President, or a Speaker, cannot, on her own, use a presidential jet—certainly not for private purposes. Plus, there’s no precedent for this in Nigeria.

None of Obasanjo’s children ever used a presidential jet for personal vanity trips. We definitely never heard of any Yar’adua children use a presidential jet for private functions. And most people never even knew Jonathan had children. We barely heard of or saw them, and surely never ever read that any of them used a presidential jet without their dad in it.

No one in Nigeria’s history has personalized governance and murdered age-old expectations of basic decency in governance with as much impunity as Buhari has. Most members of his extended family not only hold key positions in his government, his children intrude on our national consciousness in the brashest and crudest ways imaginable.

The “corrupt” Second Republic politicians that Buhari overthrew and jailed in 1983 weren’t nearly as reckless, nepotistic, corrupt, and irresponsible as he has been. Shagari’s wife and children, for instance, were barely seen. None of them ever used the presidential fleet for personal trips. None of Shagari’s family members officially worked in d inner recesses of the Presidency.

The 1999 constitution says, “A public officer shall not put himself in a position where his personal interest conflicts with his duties & responsibilities." Buhari violates this on a regular basis. Recall that in 2015, Buhari wondered why a Nigerian president would need a fleet of aircraft when even the British Prime Minister used “the same public aircraft like an ordinary Briton.” He said he would sell off the aircraft in the presidential fleet if he became president.

When we pressured him to make good his pledge, his spokesman claimed on Oct. 5, 2016 that the government had put two jets up for sale. As usual, it was a lie fabricated to repel scrutiny. But giving an entire presidential jet to a 20-something-year-old recent graduate to go to take photos of an event is a low we had never reached in our entire existence as a nation.

The stupid girl, used DSS to lock up an innocent man, and forgot about the guy in custody while she went about enjoying life.

Buhari will leave one day, then they'll pay for all their atrocities.

I'm not even angry about the dullard of daura and his family of numbskulls.

The problem I have is the buffoons who drag pots of amala with their family members under leaky brown roofs somewhere in Ibadan, Ogbomosho, Oshogbo, illorin defending the dullard on empty stomachs in their rat infested rooms.

The apex leadership of this administration continue to miss the point...

No one forced PMB to make promises of frugality, discipline, prudence, cutting wastage, reducing overhead & keeping family separate from official duties...

But he did & as such, sane Nigerians have every right to question what they see as unnecessary extravagance & indulgence.

If PMB says he would not fund the office of the 1st lady (which has turned out to be false anyway), why should the daughter be allowed to use the Presidential Jet to attend a cultural event as a private person?

If as PMB said his wife belongs to the background, how come the extravagance of using the presidential jet is bestowed on the daughter?

For those asking how else she would have travelled, it should have been the responsibility of the state government inviting her to be responsible for her trip & other expenses since they were the ones that invited her.

They could have arranged a private chopper to carry her or paid for some seats in first class.

There might be no concrete law against what has happened, but when you preach prudence to others, it is expected that you abide by your own teachings.

This is abuse of the highest order. Gen Buhari needs to understand that this is democracy and not a monarchical rule. shocked

We warned all of you that Buhari the decepticon was a very deceptive character but y'all didn't believe ..

This is a man that during campaign kept asking why Nigerian president was not using commercial airlines to travel all in a bid just to deceive Zombies but today even his youngest daughter will not all the presidential jet rest

A certain Ibrahim Abacha once went gallivanting in a presidential jet with his friends, died in a crash and his dad tried covering up the mess by lying the boy died in a regular private jet but news had gone out, he wasn’t supposed to use presidential jet for his private waka same as this wicked and useless Hanan who abandoned someone in DSS custody for 10 weeks
