Uganda is one of the first African countries working on rolling out 5G technology. Chinese telecommunications equipment giant, ZTE partnered with local carrier MTN to carry out the first 5G network trial in the country. This would be one of the first, if not the first, in East Africa.

ZTE and MTN carried out the test on Friday. Ruhakan Rugunda, the Prime Minister of Uganda, was in attendance at the event. He said that the government was in support of 5G technology. He expressed optimism that the deployment of 5G technology in Uganda will positively affect the country’s economy.

This makes Uganda the third country in Africa to have 5G, coming behind South Africa and Nigeria. The head of the country’s Communications Commission stated that the carrier was working on the development of an appropriate 5G infrastructure.

According to Wim Vanhelleputte, the Chief Executive Officer of MTN Uganda, 5G technology will increase speeds and capacity. The performance would be comparable to fiber optic cable, but with a seamless wireless experience.
