The Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, has again rejected the planned building of a nuclear power plant in Itu Local Government Area or any part of the state.

At Tuesday plenary, the House resolved that no part of Akwa Ibom land should be released for the purpose of building a nuclear power plant.

The resolution followed a motion brought before the House by the Member representing Itu State Constituency, Hon. Kufreabasi Edidem who said that the project does not conform with international standards guiding the implementation of civil nuclear programs across the globe.

He said despite warnings from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) that Nigeria lacks the technical competence to handle nuclear issues, and the rejection of the project by the 6th Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, the National Atomic Energy Commission (NAEC) has not relented in its decision to proceed with the nuclear project in Itu LGA.

“The 6th Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly through a motion moved by Rt. Hon. Nse Essien, Member representing Onna State Constituency, rejected the planned nuclear power plant, urging the Federal Government to instead of the dangerous venture, explore other available and harmless sources of power in the state, including increasing the capacity of the Ibom Power Plant.”

He further cited constant emission of radioactive radiations, discharge of non-biodegradable radioactive wastes, absorption into ecosystem and food chain, as some dangers Akwa Ibom people would be exposed to, if the nuclear power plant is cited in Itu LGA or any other part of the State.

The Speaker, while responding, commend Hon. Edidem for the timeliness of the Motion and urged the Clerk to communicate the resolution of the House to the appropriate quarters.

At Plenary also, the House passed the Bill to Eliminate Violence in Private and Public Life, Prohibit All Forms of Violence Against Persons and to provide Maximum Protection and Effective Remedies for Victims and Punishment for Offenders and Other Matters Connected Therewith into law.

Similarly, the House also passed into law, A Bill to Establish the Akwa Ibom State Bureau of Public Procurement and Budget Monitoring for the Conduct of Public Procurement in the State and for Other Matters Connected Therewith, while A Bill for a Law to Establish the Akwa Ibom State Parks and Gardens Agency and for Connected Purposes, sponsored by the Member representing Nsit Ibom State Constituency, Hon. Ifiok Udoh, scaled through First Reading and was referred to the House Committee on Culture and Tourism.

Akwa Ibom has rejected this plan multiple times. If Buhari is so bent on building a nuclear power plant take it to Cross River. Governor Ayade might cry tears of joy.

He said despite warnings from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) that Nigeria lacks the technical competence to handle nuclear issues

Meaning IAEA had warned that Nigeria lacks the technical competence to handle nuclear issues.

But now that the fed govt is determined to start generating electricity from nuclear power, why must the plant be sited in an area already suffering from environmental degradation due to oil spillage through which Nigeria practically feeds? Is the plant environment-sensitive?

What happened to the vast unproductive land in sambisa presently occupied by the desert animals called boko haram?

There's one planned for Kogi actually. Im not aware of any complaints from politicians there. It's safe to assume they're on board with the idea for now.

Most state govts don't do anything except to use fg to shine. Same pple crying that they don't have light are the first to frustrate any move to bring solution.

Anyway, they don't have choice. Fg can acquire that land and pay compensation. They shld go to court grin

Evil buhari have just found a legal way to totally wipe out the entire population of the people of the SS and SE so that his fulani brothers can now easily take over the land later. Akwa ibom people will be very stupid to allow the federal govt build such a weopon of mass genocide in their land.

All your claims are nonsense. Akwa Ibom already has a power plant. The federal government cant acquire land forcefully because the land use act vest land with state government. The federal government should cite it elsewhere.

explore other available and harmless sources of power in the state, including increasing the capacity of the Ibom Power Plant.”

The state should've done this themselves. The state has the opportunity to inceease capacity to 685 mw but didn't bother. Nobody in the government talks about the project anymore.

Buhari should take it to Katsina State.
No Niger Delta state should accept a Nuclear Plant in their domain

He only remembered Niger Delta now because the project is hazardous

Amazing your comments are getting more nonsensical. It's already been rejected stop crying. There's always the option of upgrading the Ibom Power Plant. They can site it elsewhere the power will be fed into the national grid either way.

Wow you're crying like wounded animal because the plant was rejected. Site the nuclear power in any state that wants to accommodate it. Send your petion to cut Akwa Ibom from national grid. The state will gladly keep it's power to itself.
Re: Akwa Ibom Assembly Rejects Planned Nuclear Power Plant In Itu LGA by kevoh(m): 4:48pm On Feb 12, 2020
Technically, it would be hard to site a nuclear plant in the North due to most parts of the North being dry zones as the nuclear reactors need lots of water to operate, so it needs to be sited in a region where there's a lake or a river.

Then again, an artificial lake/river can be created in the North if one must site a Nuclear plant in the North.

You're absolutely right. The nuclear plant I live near relies on a reservoir to cool the plant.

Lol you're comments are getting absurdly dumb. The 190 mw being produced are imaginary then? Keep lying to yourself since you have no factual retorts. Dont forget to write your letter cutting the state from the nation grid.
