The importance of mental health awareness
Awareness of the mental health of the population acquires relevance over the years. The Federal Ministry of Health estimates that of the 15 million people who suffer from a mental disorder in Mexico, the majority are young adults of productive age. Among which are depression, autism, anxiety disorders, eating disorders, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Therefore, the Mexican Association of Pharmaceutical Research Industries (AMIIF) shares a series of interesting data, in order to contribute to the dissemination of information that benefits the integral health of Mexicans.

WHAT IS THIS NOTE GOING ON?
• Mental health is defined as a state of well-being in which the individual is aware of their own abilities. It is related to the promotion of well-being, the prevention of mental disorders and the treatment and rehabilitation of people affected by these conditions.
• Depression and anxiety disorders are common mental health problems that affect work capacity and productivity. More than 300 million people in the world suffer from depression, considered one of the main causes of disability. While more than 260 million people in the world have anxiety disorders.
BECAUSE IT IS IMPORTANT?
• In Latin America, the 12-month prevalence (or number of cases in reference to this period of time) of mental and neurological disorders, together varies between 18.7 and 24.2% ; that of anxiety disorders, between 9.3 and 16.1%; that of affective disorders, between 7.0 and 8.7%; and that of disorders due to the consumption of psychoactive substances, between 3.6% and 5.3%.
• The World Health Organization has classified depression as the main contributing factor to global disability (more than 7.5% of all years lived with disabilities in 2015) and in sixth place are anxiety disorders (3.4 %).
• According to the WHO Mental Health Action Plan, people with major depression or schizophrenia are 40 to 60% more likely to die prematurely than the general population, due to physical health problems, which are often not taken care of. (for example, cancers, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and HIV infection), and suicide.
• The economic consequences of mental illnesses such as depression or others, are equally broad: in a study developed by the World Economic Forum it was calculated that the cumulative global impact of mental disorders in terms of economic losses will be $ 16.3 billion between 2011 and 2030 .
BRIEF HISTORY
• 1906: at the XXXVII Conference of German Southwest Psychiatry, pathologist and psychiatrist Alois Alzheimer presented a specific disease of the cerebral cortex.
• 1949: The Mental Health America Association undertakes efforts in the United States to commemorate Mental Health Month in May.
• 1996: publication of the work on the global burden of mental illnesses of the WHO and the Institute of Sanimetry and Health Assessment.

7. In Mexico, 80% of patients are treated in their homes , which demonstrates the importance of supporting the family and guiding them in matters related to the care of the sick.
