10 Most Populated Cities In Nigeria 2020

The population of the Federal Republic of Nigeria today is estimated to be 202 million, Making Nigeria to rank 7th position in the world most populated country.
The sex ratio of the total population is approximately (1,029 females per 1,000 male) as we all know the last census in Nigeria was conducted in 2006, and national population census was supposed to take place in Nigeria in 2016 but due to the current economic crisis, the census has been adjourned to further notice.

While we await the national population census, Piginloaded Infotainment has compiled an estimated list of the most populated cities in Nigeria for 2020 just to keep you informed about the city where you live.

1. LAGOS – 24 Million
Lagos, sometimes referred to as (Eko) remain the most populated city in Nigeria, most accommodating and also Nigeria’s largest city.

According to the Lagos State Government the estimated population of Lagos is 17.5 million, although this number has been disputed by the Nigerian Government and found to be unreliable by the National Population Commission of Nigeria, which put the population at over 21 million in 2016.

We estimated Lagos population in 2020 to be 24,000,000 because the city is known to be the second fastest-growing city in Africa and the seventh in the world.

2. KANO – 4.9 Million
Kano is the second most largest city in Nigeria and also the second populated city on the list of Nigeria most populated city in 2020. kano is a city and also the capital of Kano State in North West, Nigeria. Which is situated in the Sahelian geographic region, south of the Sahara.

The city was officially founded in May 1967 from part of the Northern Region, Kano state borders Katsina State to the north-west, Jigawa State to the north-east, Bauchi State to the south-east and Kaduna State to the south-west.

The above estimates by the state government Kano can be said to have increased by over a million from 3,626,068, Our 2020 estimates puts the city’s population at 4,900,000

3. IBADAN – 4.7 Million
Ibadan is the capital and the most populated city of Oyo State, Nigeria and also the third on our list of the most populated cities in Nigeria 2020 and also Ibadan is the largest city by geographical area.

In 2006 population census the city had up to 1,338,659 as the total population making the the third most populous city after Lagos and Kano, But as of 2016 report the city has a population of over 3,500,000.

We estimated Ibadan population in 2020 to be 4,700,000.

4. ABUJA – 4.2 Million
Abuja is the capital city of Nigeria, Which is located in the middles of the country Nigeria. At the 2006 census, the city of Abuja had a population of 776,298, making it one of the ten most populous cities in Nigeria.

Abuja as a city was planned and developed primarily in the 1980s and was declared as Nigeria capital on 12 December 1991, the city has experienced a huge influx of people; and the growth led to the generation of satellite towns such as Kubwa Surburbs, Karu Urban Area, Gwagwalada, Lugbe and Kuje and other smaller residential areas.

We estimated Abuja population in 2020 to be 4,200,000.

5. PORT HARCOURT – 3.1 Million
Port Harcourt is the capital and the largest city of Rivers State, Nigeria. It lies along Bonny River and is located in Niger Delta. As of 2006 Nigerian census Port Harcourt as an urban area has a population of 1,382,592.

Currently, the state government hasn’t made any public declaration on the city’s population, but different estimates have reported Port Harcourt to have more than 2 million total population.

We estimated Port Harcourt population in 2020 to be 3,100,000 according to the growth rate from 2006-2015 (+9.28%/year).

6. ABA 2.5 Million
Aba is a city in the south-east of Nigeria and the commercial center of Abia State, It is also a major urban settlement and commercial center in a region that is surrounded by small villages and towns.

Aba is well known for its craftsmen. As of 2004 Aba had an estimated population of 1,020,900, As of 2017, Aba had a population of 2,434,265.

We estimated Aba population in 2020 to be 2,500,000 because city seems not to have any growth from 2017 till date.

7. BENIN – 2.3 Million
Benin City is the capital of Edo State in southern Nigeria (2006 estimated population 1,147,188)

After we were able to gather the 2017 total population for Benin city. We estimated Benin population in 2020 to be 2,350,000 after an increase of 2.95% from 2017.

8. KADUNA – 2.1 Million
Kaduna is a city and the state capital of Kaduna State which is one of the largest states in Nigeria, The population of Kaduna was at 760,084 as of the 2006 Nigerian census.

But recent estimates claims the city now has 1,652,844 as the total population. We estimated Kaduna population in 2020 to be 2,100,000.

9. OGBOMOSO – 2 Million
Ogbomosho is also another city in Oyo State, the population was approximately 645,000 in 1991; by March 2005, it was estimated at around 1,200,000.

But what we’ve been able to gather to be the city’s population presently is 1,500,000. We estimated Ogbomosho population in 2020 to be 2,000,000.

10. MAIDUGURI – 1.8 Million
Maiduguri is the capital and the largest city of Borno State in north-eastern Nigeria. The city sits along the seasonal Ngadda River which disappears into the Firki swamps in the areas around Lake Chad. The city had 618,278 in 1991 census, and has since grown rapidly with a population exceeding a million by 2007.

Well, as of the moment what we could conclude to be the total population for the city is 1,200,000. We estimated Maiduguri population in 2020 to be 1,800,000.
