Look at the idiot. Farmers are buying lands at high prices, paying lots of guards to prevent Fulani herdsmen from using their cattles to trample on their farmlands. Buying fertilizers, paying for high cost of transportation due to the high cost of petrol and diesel in the country. This man is deluded. Many are even manually harvesting which is a less economical and counterproductive method of farming in this century. Such an idiot.. 6 Likes |

justtoodark:Biggest problem of Nigeria. No price control at all. Even free economy has some measures whereby govt monitor and regulate prices of goods especially mass produced goods. Farming is capital intensive. Long term profit but the usual naija way, make all the money at once. Our reason for making money is so different from that of most people from the rest of the world. |

The question is do those who sell above the price care about patriotism, and if they seriously want to curb it they just have to give cash rewards (not audio cash) to those who exposes them. |

This pathetic excuse for a minister is as ignorant as they come, and so are all the other entitled people on here insisting that the government should institute price controls on rice. To begin with, there is the simple question of property rights. No one is forced to buy from any particular farmer at gunpoint, and if you encounter a farmer who insists on a price you're not willing to pay, you're perfectly free to walk away from the transaction: it is not your right to insist that the farmer part with the sweat of his or her brow at a price more to your liking. What next, should the government step in to set prices for doctors, lawyers, tailors, barbers and everyone else? Why not go all the way then, and emulate North Korea? All your much-desired price controls will achieve is to create horrendous shortages of the same kind that repeatedly occur with refined petrol: no one is going to sacrifice their livelihood to subsidize the consumption of a bunch of strangers, not even you lot who want others to do so for your benefit. The same entitled fantasists who insist that Nigerian farmers "patriotically" forego their opportunity to profit from their labors are also the sort who whine incessantly about how "we import everything" and need to become "self sufficient" by banning foreign rice and other commodities. Well guess what? It's those very same import bans that create the necessary incentive for domestic farmers to grow more rice, by allowing them to sell their produce at a higher price! You can't simultaneously insist that importing rice is bad while also complaining that the price of homegrown rice has skyrocketed, since that was the intended effect of the policy from the very beginning. As for the absurdities falling from the lips of this clown of a minister, what else is one to expect of a quota-system-based, "you chop I chop" country obsessed with sharing "juicy appointments" along tribal and regional lines, other than the ministerial elevation of utter ignoramuses who have never even heard of the terms "supply" and "demand"? In a sane world, buffoons like this wouldn't even be trusted with the ticketing at train stations, let alone running entire ministries. 7 Likes 3 Shares |

In the real sense a bag of local rice should not be 7.500 naira. Else unban importation and let us choose between local rice and imported. If we are forced to eat local rice there should be a big difference between it and imported when it comes to price. |
