GEJ did wonders in Agriculture yet all the farmers in Nigeria could not produce enough rice to feed just a Primary School of 200 pupils.

all thanks to imbecilic greedy Babangida, we don't have price control anymore, and our ministry of trade and investment don't invest in agro commodity like the Awolowo days

honestly if we can give some of this northerners just 10 more years to rule, they would return Nigeria to stone age, afterall Gen Abacha refused every attempt to bring GSM to Nigeria , he resisted ATMs to, Gen buhari cancelled all shagari projects and still managed to get Nigeria very indebted without projects to show, Hell Rufai's major achievement remains demolition of peoples properties

.
God will bless you more bro

Unpatriotic, I agree. But then cowardly a statement coming from a honorable minister. If your office can't fix a reasonable price, who will?

Let FG subsidize it to the farmers/sellers. This is not oil. Let the FG start selling oil. RUGA is their priority others na audio.

To start with, how much do processors buy paddy rice from the market? 8500?

How many farmers have strong link to the end user (processors)?

Most dealers of paddy rice hoard it and sell for crazy prices like 11k5. Have you factored in the cost of transportation? Take an average of #2000 as the processing cost, how much will it cost together?

The earlier they cut the long chain of the market, the better for the populace.

1) Farmer
2) Paddy rice dealers
3) Marketers of these dealers
4)Rice Mill processor
5) Processed rice dealers
6) Wholesalers
7) Retailers
cool Consumers

It is conventional practice that the price of inputs informs the market price. What is the government doing to make paddy rice to processors available at #8000? Mind you, the long chain in this industry is another means of employment only that our people are greedy.

Has there been effective linkage between farmers and rice processors? Until you bridge that gap, nothing is going to work out. For a fact, most Nigerians are greedy. We take advantage of situations.

In fact, what is the government doing to protect and improve the conditions of rice farmers? I know they are trying but a lot has to be done in bringing this price down considering that it is a function of demand and supply.

Most of the productions are in the north while there is a large market in Lagos, have you looked at the cost of transportation?

Recommendations

1) Bring the farmers closer to the rice millers and shorten the long chain

2) Government should provide dedicated transportation for agricultural produce from farms to the buyers and sellers of these produces. Logistics cost is killing business

3) Rice Farmers cost need to be subsidized. Anyway they can help farmers reduce cost

4) Government should be heavily involved in this rice production. You can’t be dictating to a private investor how much to sell. Some people took loans at fairly high cost.

The earlier we realize that one aspect of the economy affects the other the better for us.

Rubbish. Don't dictate to the market how to sell. People who overprice will not have customers. And customers should not kill themselves to buy what they can't afford. Let the market decide the price.

What is unpatriotic is people in government refusing to eat Naija rice, buy Naija cars, or even patronize Naija doctors.

It's pathetic and disheartening to hear a supposedly top government official in the person of Minister of Agriculture and rural development lamenting about the astronomical increase in the price of rice. Since the govt have decided to close the borders then the onus lies on them to impose price ceiling. With this government would be able to control, or place a limit, on how high a price is charged for a product, commodity, or service. Governments use price ceilings to protect consumers from conditions that could make commodities prohibitively expensive. Na wah o......This is not rocket science nah!

Biggest problem of Nigeria.

No price control at all.

Even free economy has some measures whereby govt monitor and regulate prices of goods especially mass produced goods.

Farming is capital intensive. Long term profit but the usual naija way, make all the money at once.

Our reason for making money is so different from that of most people from the rest of the world.
Na wa for you o
After battling through the rage that is herdsmen setting farms on fire, getting farm inputs at high prices.
Increased vat inclusive.
You still want to dictate how I sell my product.
So because of you, I should be selling at a loss

No serious government regulate price ...it would kill the market ...we told them the factors are not inplace to ban foreign rice

Foreign rice is meant to sale 8k ...10k at most if allow them import it tax it extra 5k ...in one year we can make 50bn to 100bn this can then be used to develop our seeds that can thrive here and give us 6 ton to 12 ton per hectare like the rest of the world ...instead 1 or luckly 2 tons we get here

In five years ,we can start setting already existing rice farmers ...giving them loan n access to more land ...by the time imported rice cost 13k
And it cost 5k to produce on bag in Nigeria ...that war is over

Na sense no be by force
.Oga, I doubt you're in Nigeria!
Did I just read you say Tax!

C'mon, you and I know that the real importers of foreign rice are the smugglers... Now , how do you tax an illegal importer?

For me, subsidy is an option, regulation is another one, but ultimately government direct input, like someone did suggest of the ministry of trade and investment getting involved in the promotion, development and injection of our rice molecules into the various market channels would have been a way to go!
If government can be as serious with the rice produce as it were with oil and gas...

I don’t understand...if paddy rice is 8500, and operational code is 2000, making 10500

How do you expect rice to 14,000?
That’s 3,500 difference, ain’t you gonna consider the middle men before it get to the retailer Or are they expecting millers to make just 1,500 profit?

Nigeria always running away from the root problem, I think the cost of paddy rice should be dealt with, farmers needs mechanization to boost yield and reduce price....the millers have no choice but to sell high
