Hemorrhoids refer to a medical condition that arises from painful passing of feces through rectum. This happens due to swelling in veins inside anal area to form oval or round shape lumps causing making bowel moment difficult. In severe cases, hemorrhoids size grew disproportionately due to enlargement of veins leaving the rectum walls stretched and thin to develop irritation when stool passes.

Generally, hemorrhoids can be of types including one that originates in the rectum called internal; and another that originates in the anus known as external. External hemorrhoids develop underneath anus skin, which, on swelling may lead to pain, itching or bleeding during feces release.

Cause and Symptoms

Conventionally, hemorrhoids are linked to prolong sitting in toilet, straining during bowel movements and chronic constipation. These conditions interfere in blood flow in that part of the body causing blood pooling in the vessels and their subsequent enlargement. During pregnancy the growth of uterus exerts pressure on the veins in rectum causing irregular blood flow.

In general, around 75% of individual experience hemorrhoids at some point in a lifetime, however with varying severity. The prevalence of this disease peaks between the age of 45 and 65 years. The problem equally affects male and female candidates and can be caused by pregnancy, straining on the toilet, coughing, obesity, vomiting, pregnancy and chronic constipation.

Symptoms of enlarged hemorrhoids include severe pain, mucus discharge, sensation of unfinished bowel discharge, burning and itching in anal opening and even painless bleeding.

On the basis of severity, hemorrhoids can be classified into four categories:

• First-degree hemorrhoids are slightly enlarged but do not extend beyond the anus, however can bleed during bowl movement.
• Second-degree hemorrhoids generally prolapse and retract to come out of the anus during bowl movement and return back on their own, with or without bleeding.
• Third-degree hemorrhoids prolapse and needed to be pushed back inside the anal canal by using a finger.
• Fourth-degree hemorrhoids prolapse outside the anal canal and cannot be pushed inside. This type of hemorrhoids also comprises thrombosed hemorrhoids that contain clots of blood.

Severe conditions of hemorrhoid cannot be cured with medicines and patients need to seek surgical option to get rid of painful bowel movements. The surgical removal of hemorrhoids is known as Hemorrhoidectomy. This procedure involves removal of the hemorrhoids from around rectum and the anus.

Hemorrhoidectomy

A person having large protruding hemorrhoids or internal hemorrhoids that return even after rubber band ligation or persistently symptomatic external hemorrhoids, will need surgical intervention to treat these conditions. In a conventional hemorrhoidectomy procedure, a small incision is made around both internal and external hemorrhoid tissue to remove offending blood vessels. The success rate of this is about 95% without causing major. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia, but patients are relieved the day. After the procedure, patients can resume their daily routine within one or two weeks. Most of the patients are happily living a painless life after they opted for hemorrhoidectomy.
