So please quit badmouthing people over irrelevancies. Do what works for you and let others do what works for them. It's not everything you should be catching feelings over. I don't know where the above interactions occurred but it's most likely Igboland I'm guessing. In the southwest, Yorubas are not familiar with this product in their cuisine. 4 Likes 1 Share |

The cooked product is typically darker than most other vegetables, which is why it's strange to Yoruba cooking because most of our vegetables tend to be light (bitter leaf is an exception). It also doesn't have the smoother texture Yorubas prefer in their cooking. It's more similar to cassava leaf. |

okomile: I scanned your posts and you don't seem Yoruba. Possibly you have non-Yoruba orientation if at all your claim is to be believed. |

On Ugwu: It's very common in Lagos markets (together with periwinkle), this is because the demand there is higher, some Yorubas might also try periwinkle occasionally, but it's not a traditionally Yoruba cuisine. We eat regular snail. You can also get coconut and cassava, together with native pear, these are traditional Igbo snacks available in Lagos. Yorubas don't eat the coconut/cassava so much, the taste is unfamiliar. African pears are eaten by Yoruba. 2 Likes |

Yoruba vegetable stew. You can see the lighter texture of the leaves both in colour and density: When it's too dark, that means it's overcooked and this affects the taste (not fresh). Unlike the Igbo version where the tougher leaves need to cook longer. |

tyup: The correct spelling is Ugwu in my opinion, it probably became Ugu after Nigeria started shipping the leaf to the US. I remember that made news some years ago. |

Those of you dating Igbos or other non Yoruba Nigerians, doing business with them, or whatever type of relationship you have with other tribes, that doesn't mean you have to be jumpy every time a discussion of Yoruba culture comes up. Just ignore, it's not about you. If your partner is uncomfortable with Yoruba discussions, then stay away but you should not ask other people to do the same. |

Ugwu/Ugu also does well when added to yam pottage or yam porridge in miniscule quantities. This is because the leaf texture holds firm with the longer cooking time. |

The name "eweroko" which some sources say is the Yoruba name for Ugwu/Ugu, might not be widely known. "Efo Igbo" I think has more recognition. |

Sammy07: I'm not sure if you're saying Yoruba don't eat/know African egg plant or you just want to derail the thread. Why would Yorubas call egg plant leaf efo Igbo? Eggplant is Igba. Efo Igbo is used for tonic (according to google). I'm not sure if it's also used in party cooking, it's either that or the egg plant leaf. For party cooking, it's cheaper perhaps and sold in bulk quantities so that would make it more convenient and cost effective. Also, the longer cooking time. The reason many Yorubas would be confused by the term Ugwu/Ugu/Efo Igbo is because they don't know what it is. In the southwest, it's very common in Lagos. Not sure about other places. |

Besides, there's a different pumpkin species normally eaten in Yorubaland. The name is very popular, let me think about it. Ugwu/Ugu is fluted pumpkin, the Yoruba one is regular (Nigerian) pumpkin I think, hollow stem and very tasty but also doesn't hold up to long cooking because it looses it's taste and texture. |
