The United States will suspend all travel from Europe to the United States for the next 30 days due to the risk of the coronavirus, President Trump announced in an address to the nation Wednesday night.

The new rules will go into effect Friday at midnight, he said. Britain will not be included in the travel ban.

Trump blamed Europe for not enacting strict early travel restrictions on China as the United States did and said U.S. clusters of the virus were “seeded by travel from Europe.”

The president also called on Congress to consider a host of economic measures to blunt the pandemic’s impact in the United States, including “immediate payroll tax relief” and an increase of $50 billion in funding to the Small Business Administration to aid low-interest loans.

“We are at a critical time in the fight against the virus,” Trump said.

Trump touted the fact that health insurance industry CEOs have agreed to waive copays for coronavirus treatments as well as an $8.3 billion funding bill he signed last week.

He warned of infections’ danger to the elderly.

“The elderly population must be very, very careful,” Trump says, adding that they should avoid non-essential travel in crowded areas.
