their age makes NO DIFFERENCE, it's their state of mind that is the problem.
Africa may be 25yrs behind but all these guys are shoulder to shoulder with the west when it comes to wealthy individuals.

Your so called Information Minister claims GEJ brought FB to Nigeria - I doubt a young and fresh mind would make that kind of mistake.

Re: Why Africa Is 25 Years Behind The Developed World? by OchiAgha2(m): 4:29pm On Dec 23, 2010
That is, because Africa has a gerontocratic society, in which elders are seen as all-knowing. Plus, the elders will not listen to someone who is younger than them. It is based on traditional African culture.
Re: Why Africa Is 25 Years Behind The Developed World? by Nobody: 4:43pm On Dec 23, 2010
How old are our thieving governors, legislators and d entire political class? They are of d same age with d guys from d west. How old was mandela when he became S.A president? Our criminal justice system is weak along side with that of most african contries and our values gone coupled with poverty which African leaders has deployed as an instrument of oppression. The factors militating against good leadership in Africa is just too numerious to mention. Its painful though.

and what has that got to do with the subject at hand? is that whats making Africa's lack of BASIC HEALTH CARE, DECENT JOBS, FOOD or DECENT HOUSING?!  pls dont derail this thread for your own political agenda.

the state of mind of ALL these African leader (and most Africans) has nothing to do with their age, whether old or young, a greedy selfish thief will always be a greedy selfish criminal!

each for their own and god for all, thats Africa for you!!!

This is a VERY MISLEADING presentation.

You conveniently OMITTED the old European leaders such as Berlusconi,  Aníbal Cavaco Silva  of Portugal (68)
and Cyprus president Papadopoulos  (74), and OMITTED the YOUNG African leaders, like Goodluck Jonathan, Joseph Kabila, Yayi Boni of Benin, and Ernest Koroma of Sierra Leone - all in their 40s and 50s.

All in order to present a heavily biased, distorted, anti-African conclusion.

If you're trying to point fingers at Africans, the least you can do is be honest yourself.

Its not with the age.

Goerge Bush Snr (65-69yrs), Ronald Reagan (70-79yrs) ruled America and their country prospered

America is not ruled by its presidents. Those are just figureheads and puppets.  The country would have ''prospered'' at the time it did regardless of who was president.

Robbed by who? by themselves?

@poster, lol. .nice one. All these geriatric so-called leaders need to step aside before that country, Nigeria and Africa in general, can progress. Unfortunately, I don't have much hope for the youth either. It's a sad situation.

^^doesnt matter who does the robbing, the point is it is and has been.

Re: Why Africa Is 25 Years Behind The Developed World? by viewlekan: 9:40pm On Dec 23, 2010
And just to correct the OP ,Herman Van Rompuy is not the prime minister of Begium anymore, he is currently the President of the EU council, not that it matters or  skew your analysis.

I will however agree with the poster that said you ommitted several other presidents/ prime ministers that could have impacted on the average age in both regions. I personally do not think age is an important factor in determining the performance of a leader, the most crucial element is the political and institutional framework of the country, for instance the USA, UK and most developed countries could have a leader of any age but will still function because of an established system that ensures accountabilty in the form of checks and balances, hence, no matter how noble the intentions of a policy recommendation by a leader might seem, it still must pass through a rigorous democratic process except in extenuating circumstances where the leader can use veto powers.

Unfortunately the reverse is the case in most African countries where politics is shambolic and self interest is the main motivation for holding public office. I think that is the bane of governance in Africa, and not age.
Re: Why Africa Is 25 Years Behind The Developed World? by tonitone1(m): 2:45am On Dec 25, 2010
@Rossike

Okay take all the bio-data of leaders in Africa, i mean all and plot a simple pie chart or histogram of their age group, say 40-50, 60-70, and > 80 and do same with the developed world, i.e. Europe and USA including Japan, then do a like for like comparison, you will surely be amazed at the outcomes, it would definitely not be different from the main theme of this topic

Thanks for observing.
Infact, youngies like Bankole have proven to be the reason why age is not an issue in african leadership. Is Bankole not the one supervising the house where people pay themselves billions at the expense of national development?
