A prominent Iranian cleric has said it is permissible to use a future coronavirus vaccine developed by Israel if “there is no substitute.”

The Iranian regime views Israel as a mortal enemy. But Iran has also faced one of the most severe outbreaks of the COVID-19 coronavirus outside its origin and epicentre in China.

“It is not permissible to buy and sell from Zionists and Israel,” Grand Ayatollah Naser Makarem Shirazi, 93, told the Iranian daily Hamdeli on Wednesday.

“Unless the treatment is unique and there is no substitute,” he added, “then this is not an obstacle.”

Shirazi, one of the highest authorities in Shiite Islam and a former member of the regime’s Assembly of Experts that appoints the supreme leader, is considered among the regime’s more hard-line ideologues.

He has called the Holocaust a “superstition,” opposed owning pets and objected to efforts to allow women to attend soccer matches.

The response may reflect a regime in crisis.

At least 429 people have died in Iran from the coronavirus outbreak, according to Iranian officials, and more than 10,000 people were confirmed as infected as of Thursday. International estimates suggested the death toll could be far higher.

The outbreak has put additional strain on a regime already battered by US sanctions and mass riots over the past year over fuel price hikes and other economic pressures.

On Wednesday, media reports said Israel’s Institute for Biological Research, which operates under the aegis of the Defense Ministry, was closing in on a vaccine for the coronavirus.

Later in the day, the Defense Ministry denied any “breakthrough” had been achieved and said the institute’s efforts “will take time” to bear fruit.

Reporting on the possibility that Israel would be the first to produce a vaccine, the Iranian daily Hamdeli turned to Shirazi to ask if Iranians would be permitted to buy and use the Israeli-developed vaccine.

Hmmmm. Iran has good scientists and engineers they have been under sanctions for forty years and have been able to achieve appreciable scientific and technological feat. Now think of what this country would have achieved without all these crippling sanctions.

Between Judaism religion and the New Testament, which one came first? How would the former (Judaism) be born out of the latter when the latter (New Testament) never existed before Judaism?

The religion of Mary, Joseph and the child Jesus growing up was Judaism. Jesus himself taught the Jews in the synagogue. He was a synagogue attendee himself before his ministry started. Too much illogical statement in your comment.

Those prophets you mentioned walked with God. They were never Christians. Christians means those that walk like Christ/followers of Christ. Christianity was not as old as the prophets. It all started with Christ. That’s why apostles were first called Christians in Antioch. Non of the prophets were called Christians after Christ that never was born. They never professed Christ. How can you call them Christians? My thought is not about Pharisees and Sadducees or any other shortcomings about their religion or practices . It’s about Judaism being the religion of the prophets out of which Christians came out.

Don’t compare Judaism with African traditional religion. Jesus did his preaching in the synagogue out of the Jews holy book. He preached out of the scrolls out of Torah and not out of the Bible/New Testament. That should tell you all you need to know that Jesus practiced Judaism and afterwards brought a reform to the religion which gave birth to Christianity still with Judaism practices in it. We as Christians still practice a lot of things that stem out of Judaism (Judeo/Christian traditions)
